Bloomberg News first reported that a copy of the decision was briefly posted on the court's website and then removed. A Supreme Court spokesperson confirmed that something was inadvertently posted online but said the high court's final opinion remained unreleased. "The Court's Publications Unit inadvertently and briefly uploaded a document to the Court's website. The Court's opinion in these cases will be issued in due course." Chief Justice Roberts' report revealed he rented out properties in Ireland and Maine. A report for Justice Elena Kagan revealed she rented out a parking spot in Washington, DC. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Elena Kagan both earned extra income by renting out properties — though the properties are vastly different. According to Roberts' report, shared online by SCOTUSblog, Roberts rented out cottages in Ireland's Limerick County and Maine's Knox County. Kagan, meanwhile, rented out a parking space at a building in Washington, DC, according to her report, also shared by SCOTUSblog.

The Supreme Court declined to take up his case, effectively allowing the police officers to avoid the lawsuit. Novak appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, even getting the satirical news site The Onion to write an amicus brief. The Supreme Court regularly takes on less than 1% of the case petitions it receives every year, according to News 5 Cleveland. In recent years there has been an effort in the US to end qualified immunity protections for police officers. The George Floyd Justice in Police Act was passed by the House in 2020 and included a section restricting qualified immunity for police officers.

WASHINGTON — Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the Supreme Court is not as divided as members of the public might think, praising his liberal colleagues and highlighting rulings in which the justices were not divided on ideological lines during a recent public appearance. Kavanaugh had special praise for the late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the recently retired liberal Justice Stephen Breyer and Breyer’s successor, liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, saying she “has hit the ground running" and is "thoroughly prepared." Ginsburg and Breyer "couldn't have been better at welcoming me to the court," Kavanaugh said, referring to his nomination by then-President Donald Trump in 2018. Kavanaugh this week appeared eager to counter any perceptions that the court is usually divided on ideological lines, pointing out several cases in which he had joined liberal justices in 5-4 decisions. Statistics compiled for the SCOTUSblog legal website showed, however, that in the previous court term only 29 percent of the decisions were unanimous, lower than at any time in the past two decades.
