In the 1970s, there were about 175,000 residents in Centro Storico, the main island and historic center of Venice. In fact, there are now more tourist beds in Venice than there are residents. Last week, Venice took action on overtourism, introducing a 5€ fee to day trippers who want to access the city. "You can't impose an entrance fee to a city; all they're doing is transforming it into a theme park. Marco Bertorello | Afp | Getty ImagesDespite its many detractors, the day fee is a significant move on the part of Venice's government to confront the challenge of overtourism, which has become a significant global problem since the pandemic.

Pulling into the Santa Lucia train station in Venice on Thursday morning, passengers were told via an overhead announcement that they might have to pay a 5-euro fee to enter the city’s historic center. Failure to pay could result in a fine from 50 to 300 euros, the announcement said. Those who hadn’t were directed to a booth where they could. After registering, overnight visitors were sent on their way without having to pay, but people planning to stay just for the day were charged (though there were other exemptions). It was a new welcome to Venice, the first city in the world to charge day visitors a nominal entrance fee, a measure city officials hope will help counter overtourism.

Venice will begin on April 25, 2024 charging day trippers for entry, a world first aimed at easing pressure on the Italian city drowning under the weight of mass tourism. Venice became the first city in the world to charge a payment for tourists in a bid to alleviate the pressures of mass tourism and make the city more livable for its residents. The pilot program will exact a fee of 5 euros ($5.4) from day-trippers to Venice, one of Italy's most picturesque and historic cities. Municipal workers were seen checking the tickets of day-trippers outside the front of the fragile lagoon city's Santa Lucia railway station. The charge applies to tourists arriving between 8:30 a.m. local time and 4 p.m., while access is free outside of those hours.

SANTA LUCIA, Mexico, Sept 20 (Reuters) - There is still work to be done with Mexican authorities to smooth over hiccups caused by the government-mandated move of cargo flights from the nation's busiest airport to a farther-away airport, a UPS executive said on Wednesday. UPS kicked off cargo flights at the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) - a year-old, military-run airport backed by the country's president - last month, said Francisco Ricaurte, the firm's Mexico and Latin America head, in an interview with Reuters at the hub. Mexico earlier this year ordered cargo carriers stop operating at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), pushing them to use AIFA instead in a bid to reduce oversaturation at AICM. The decree applies only to flights carrying only cargo, while passenger flights are still permitted to bring cargo to AICM. Ricaurte said UPS was still using its storage facilities at AICM as well as the depot it jointly operates at AIFA.

Fifty years after a 1973 coup in Chile that ushered in 17 years of brutal military rule and saw some 40,000 people imprisoned, disappeared, tortured or killed, Reuters went with five former political prisoners to the sites of their confinement. MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — For at least 80 days, ever since drought and mismanagement sapped the drinking water supply of my country’s capital, the water that has come out of our taps has tasted terribly of salt and smelled awfully of chemicals. We cook pasta, wash lettuce and make coffee with it, buying more and more plastic water containers that wind up in the dump. Washing machines don’t foam, and the electric water heaters are failing from a buildup of sodium. At the height of the crisis, sodium and chloride levels rose to double and triple, respectively, the maximum values allowed by our own national drinking water regulations. And in 2004, we became the first country in the world to write access to safe drinking water into the Constitution.

"Water used to cover everything you can see." The South American country of 3.5 million people is reeling from its worst drought in 74 years, pushing frustrated residents to depend on bottled water. Low rainfall has forced water authorities to use water from a saltier part of the Santa Lucia river, which supplies most of Uruguay's drinking water, leaving tap water undrinkable for many. Earlier this month, Uruguay's government declared a water emergency, exempting taxes on bottled water and ordering the construction of a new reservoir. "The issue is real," said musician Frank Lampariello, after stocking up on bottled water at a supermarket in Solymar, on Montevideo's outskirts.

And while famous rice dishes such as sushi, fried rice and paella are among the most prominent in the global spotlight, there are so many more rice recipes out there to put on your radar – and seek out on your travels. BuzzFeed's part of that group too — but it's come up with a peculiar idea to ramp up business (and stock). Similar to other companies, BuzzFeed laid off 12% of its workforce last month, citing a worsening economic environment. The stock also got a boost from news of the media company's partnership with Meta, which will see BuzzFeed bring more content to Facebook and Instagram. It's unclear how ChatGPT's parent, OpenAI, ties into Meta's multi-million dollar deal with BuzzFeed, if at all, but the agreement is meant to boost creator content for Facebook and Instagram. It was the king of viral content and quirky listicles — and Facebook of course had a hand in getting eyeballs on BuzzFeed.

REUTERS/Henry RomeroWASHINGTON (Reuters) -Classified documents from Joe Biden’s vice-presidential days were discovered in November by the U.S. president’s personal attorneys at a Washington think tank, a White House lawyer said on Monday. He added the White House was cooperating with the Justice Department and the National Archives. The Justice Department, the National Archives and the think tank did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sauber’s statement did not mention the number of the classified documents or what they contained or their level of classification. The Justice Department is separately probing former President Donald Trump’s handling of highly sensitive classified documents that he retained at his Florida resort after leaving the White House in January 2021.

The British pound continued its slide against the U.S. dollar this week, hitting a new record low against the greenback Monday. Winners Secker is overweight the blue-chip FTSE 100 , which he believes is "arguably the ultimate 'weak FX' play."
