Beijing's lack of concrete economic stimulus actions poured cold water on U.S. investors who went big on the China trade, and strategists on Wall Street are warning of disappointment ahead. The professional cohort had piled into beaten-down stocks last month, stirred by hopes of more government assistance for the troubled China economy. "Indeed, the only part of the Chinese economy that appeared to be holding was its export sector. Investor sentiment toward Chinese stocks was partly aided by high-profile hedge fund manager David Tepper of Appaloosa Management, who turned extremely bullish. Stanley Druckenmiller reportedly said he's not interested in Chinese stocks under the current political leadership, regardless of the new policies.

The new market theory was that investors would sell some of their high-flying technology winners and buy small cap laggards primed for a comeback when the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates. But on Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost more than 2% , and the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark lost even more. "If you look in small caps, they don't have their earnings follow through. The senior global market strategist said he's unfavorable on small caps as the stocks lack strong fundamentals and many fail to generate a profit. The Russell 2000 Index of small-cap stocks gained 10.10% in July, posted its best monthly performance since December 2023, when it gained 12.05%.

Fixed-income investors may want to consider making a few tweaks to their portfolio as the second half of the year gets underway. But the central bank is expected to start cutting rates in the coming months, perhaps as soon as September. However, many on Wall Street still believe two cuts are likely this year, including Charles Schwab. Jones anticipates better returns for fixed income in the second half but believes volatility will remain high. Investors can have a barbell portfolio with Treasurys on one end and investment-grade bonds and an agency MBS on the other, she suggested.

New York CNN —YOLO economy, meet the “yo, no” economy. In what was dubbed the YOLO economy (short for “you only live once”), or revenge spending, consumers shelled out for the experiences and goods they had missed. And that may be bad news for the economy. “We are monitoring the issue and engaging with market participants,” a spokesperson for the Securities and Exchange Commission told CNN. Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading, told CNN that the NYSE’s explanation is hard to square with the bizarre trades that hit the tape.

Eaton and DuPont are both unconventional AI plays, as the data center market grows to meet the demands of the generative AI boom. Wells Fargo Investment Institute last month described rising data center demand as having positive "trickle-down effects" on the industrial sector. WFII wrote that spending from Big Tech firms into data centers, in particular, creates "meaningful downstream impacts" for industrial companies. Amazon Web Services is reportedly investing nearly $150 billion in data centers within the next 15 years to support AI efforts. During a Barclays investor conference in February, CFO Lori Koch said DuPont's data center and AI exposure will help boost the company's electronics business.

It may seem counterintuitive for Wall Street to reward companies for letting people go. After all, layoffs are usually thought to be a sign that the business isn’t doing so hot. And while a lot of the layoff talk is concentrated in tech, investors were also quite pleased about job cuts at Estée Lauder . Many companies took an aggressive approach to hiring during the pandemic, particularly tech companies whose engagement boomed while everyone was stuck at home. The tech companies developing AI products are the best positioned to try them out.

Investors are pricing in a best-case outcome where earnings rise and inflation returns to normal in a continued economic expansion. “It’s a tough needle to thread,” said Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “And that pretty much pulls forward almost all the returns, in our minds, for 2024.”AdvertisementCrit Thomas, a global market strategist at Touchstone Investments, has the same concern. “And so at 21x earnings, there’s very little margin for error here.”AdvertisementFourth-quarter earnings mostly met measured expectations , as did forward guidance. Clark Bellin, the chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth, said he’s less worried about valuations broadly and is more interested in seeing which sectors look cheap.

The key catalyst for stocks will likely continue to be the expected trajectory of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. In September, historically the weakest month for stocks, the S&P 500 fell nearly 5%. The S&P 500 gained nearly 9% gain in November, historically a strong month for the index. Overall, December has been the second-best month for the S&P 500, with the index up an average of 1.54% for the month since 1945, according to CFRA. Many other names have languished: The equal-weighted S&P 500, whose performance is not skewed by big tech and growth stocks, is up around 6% in 2023.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Falling Treasury yields helped launch an explosive rebound in stocks and lifted U.S. government bonds from 16-year lows. Evidence of the dynamic between yields and financial conditions could be seen in last week’s 0.5% decline in the Goldman Sachs Financial Conditions Index, its sixth biggest weekly drop since 1990. Policymakers have largely refrained from verbally pushing back on the easing in financial conditions during a flurry of appearances by policymakers this week. Analysts at TD Securities, however, believe further easing in Treasury yields will eventually become a "double-edged sword." To be sure, not every scenario sees the Fed in a higher-for-longer posture if Treasury yields continue falling.

Still, some traders interpreted his comments as an endorsement of keeping rates around current levels through most of next year. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury, which move inversely to bond prices, rose briefly to 5% late on Thursday, a closely watched level not seen since 2007. “That gives people the go ahead to take rates above 5%.”Whiteley said that he sees 10-year yields moving as high as 5.5% before peaking. An extended climb in Treasury yields risks exacerbating the pressures that have dogged a broad array of assets in recent months. Still, even if the Fed cuts rates over the next few years, yields could stay above 5% if inflation and growth remain high, he said.

Valuations have swelled, with the Magnificent Seven trading at an average forward price-to-earnings ratio of 33.5, compared with the S&P 500's P/E of 18.3. “Everybody knows these guys are going to make money," said Sameer Samana, senior global market strategist at the Wells Fargo Investment Institute (WFII), referring to the Magnificent Seven. "The reallocation of funds going forward is going to suggest lower returns and more difficulty for the Magnificent Seven to maintain their leadership." The seven companies' combined market capitalization topped 30% of the S&P 500's overall market value earlier this month, according to LSEG Datastream. Some investors are also drawing distinctions among the seven stocks.
