The world’s largest coral has just been discovered in the southwest Pacific Ocean, scientists announced Wednesday. It’s three times larger than the previous record-breaker in American Samoa, according to Pristine Seas, and longer than a blue whale, the planet’s biggest animal. Long Covid continues to evade a clear diagnostic test, researchers reported in a study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They found no differences between those with long Covid and those without the condition. Different symptoms were assigned different scores, and a long Covid diagnosis was met if the score reached a level of 12. There was no time cutoff for symptoms and a positive Covid test was not required for diagnosis. Dr. Nisha Viswanathan, the director of the long Covid clinic at UCLA Health, was not surprised with the results based on her experience working with long Covid patients for three years.

The Teatro alla Scala in Milan, one of the world’s most prestigious and storied opera houses, announced Tuesday that its next leader would be Fortunato Ortombina, who is currently general director of Venice’s opera house, Teatro La Fenice. The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. The fact is that gas cars aren’t being weaponized on most of the continent the way they are in America. I’m all in favor of the commendable end to gas cars that Europe has now embraced – a decade or more hence. Of course, that’s only one corner of what’s happened to Paris traffic under the Hidalgo regime. The same toxic, planet-warming emissions are being generated, especially with all that idling in place in endless traffic jams. Perhaps a couple of decades from now when all those gas guzzling cars will be gone entirely?

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The tiny Caribbean island of Dominica is creating the world’s first marine protected area for one of earth’s largest animals: the endangered sperm whale. Sperm whales defecate near the surface because they shut down non-vital functions when they dive to depths of up to 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). And sperm whales in Dominica are believed to defecate more than whales elsewhere, said Shane Gero, a whale biologist and founder of the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, a research program focused on sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean. He noted that sperm whales are a matrilineal society, with young males leaving and switching oceans at some point in their lives. Another sperm whale was nicknamed “Fruit Salad” because a researcher happened to be snacking on that at the time.

And soon there will be a third smaller, invitation-only space in the basement called Sala Gaspare, named after the company founder, Gaspare Campari. Architectural monuments stand next to newer construction; timeless sartorial style meets current fashion on the street each day. The aperitivo will always be king in Milan.

Two residents burned to death in their room, while four others died from intoxication, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said, speaking to reporters on the scene. Having said that, six dead is a very heavy death toll," Sala said, indicating that the facility housed 167 people. They evacuated about 80 people, including many in wheelchairs, while another 80 or so were taken to hospital, local firefighters' chief Nicola Miceli told RAI public television.
