Allen’s contradictory statements were in the spotlight during the second week of his trial in a Carroll County courtroom. In the interview, Allen — then a CVS clerk — provided an account of what he’d done that Feb. 13. Once at Westville Correctional Facility, Allen told prison officials and officers — including the warden — that he killed the girls, prosecutors have said. A week later, Wala said, Allen told her he wanted to sign a confession, prompting the psychologist to tell him to speak with his attorneys. A day later, on May 10, Allen called his wife with the psychologist present and told her that he’d killed the girls, Wala testified.

The stroke was on the right side of his brain, leaving the left side of his body “completely incapacitated” and causing his speech to be slurred, said Shortz, 72. But the opposite side of the body is affected, which left Shortz with the weakness on his left side. Even with the 15 minutes he spent on the floor, Shortz said, he was at the hospital within an hour. “I do not think that there’s a timestamp to recovery, because our brain is really quite plastic,” she said. “Like solving a crossword puzzle,” Shortz said, “even if you don’t know certain things that are in the puzzle, tackle what you do know.

House Oversight Chair James Comer is opening an investigation into Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Sunday visit to an ammunition factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The Republican investigation comes as the relationship between Zelenskyy and former president Donald Trump seems to sour. On Wednesday, Trump accused Zelenskyy of insulting him — Trump said the Ukrainian president was "making nasty little dispersions toward" him — and adding that he got along with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very well." Zelenskyy is in the United States to attend the UN General Assembly high-level week in New York, where he is meeting with world leaders. Trump was expected to meet with the Ukrainian President on Thursday at Trump Tower, but a Trump campaign official told NBC News Wednesday that the meeting was not happening.

The FBI is warning election offices to be on the lookout after threatening letters containing suspicious substances were sent to the offices of multiple secretaries of state throughout the country. Secretaries of state, attorney general offices and state election offices in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma were targeted. The FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement partners are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances which have been mailed to Secretary of State's offices. The incident is also the second time in the past year that threats have hit multiple state election offices simultaneously.

NASA is considering keeping the two astronauts who flew Boeing's capsule to the International Space Station there until February as a result of issues the spaceship encountered midflight. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams before boarding Boeing's Starliner capsule at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Fla., on May 6. The thruster issues cropped up as Starliner was nearing the space station in June, forcing delays during the docking process. Mission managers also conducted two “hot fire tests” in space, firing the capsule’s thrusters in short bursts while it remained docked at the space station. SpaceX has been transporting astronauts to the International Space Station since 2020.

That’s the credo of Elizabeth Glaser, a public health nurse for the Indian Health Service, who drives thousands of miles throughout the Navajo Nation searching for community members with the infection. While other reportable sexually transmitted infections declined or remained flat during the pandemic, over 207,000 cases of syphilis were reported in 2022, an 80 percent increase since 2018 and the highest number reported since 1950. Most disturbing within this trend is the rise in congenital syphilis. Over 3,700 cases were reported in 2022, which is more than double the number of cases of mother-to-child transmission of H.I.V. To tackle congenital syphilis, we must cast off societal squeamishness about S.T.I.s and invest in proven control strategies: public education, testing, treatment and contact tracing.

Over the past year, many of the most important web sources used for training A.I. models have restricted the use of their data, according to a study published this week by the Data Provenance Initiative, an M.I.T.-led research group. The study, which looked at 14,000 web domains that are included in three commonly used A.I. training data sets, discovered an “emerging crisis in consent,” as publishers and online platforms have taken steps to prevent their data from being harvested. The researchers estimate that in the three data sets — called C4, RefinedWeb and Dolma — 5 percent of all data, and 25 percent of data from the highest-quality sources, has been restricted.
A daily dose of a widely used antibiotic can prevent some infections with syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia, potentially a new solution to the escalating crisis of sexually transmitted infections, scientists reported on Thursday. Scientists still have to resolve significant questions, including whether S.T.I.s might become resistant to the antibiotic and what effect it could have on healthy gut bacteria in people taking it every day. The approach would be recommended primarily to people at elevated risk of sexually transmitted infections during certain periods, said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, an infectious diseases physician at the University of Southern California who was not involved in the new work. “The number of people who are really going to be offered this and take this is still very small,” he said. “In general, the more choices we have for people, the more prevention options we have, the better.”

AdvertisementThe world's top two AI startups are ignoring requests by media publishers to stop scraping their web content for free model training data, Business Insider has learned. OpenAI and Anthropic have been found to be either ignoring or circumventing an established web rule, called robots.txt, that prevents automated scraping of websites. TollBit, a startup aiming to broker paid licensing deals between publishers and AI companies, found several AI companies are acting in this way and informed certain large publishers in a Friday letter, which was reported earlier by Reuters. The letter did not include the names of any of the AI companies accused of skirting the rule. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers.

It expanded Meta AI in April as a chat and image generator function across all its apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta AI told Business Insider that it was trained on large datasets of transcriptions from YouTube videos. Meta AI initially said its training data included a third-party dataset of 3.7 million transcribed YouTube videos. In responding to further queries about its YouTube training data, Meta AI said its training data included another, larger dataset of transcriptions from 6 million YouTube videos also compiled by a third party.

At Westminster, the Dogs Are in Charge

The tennis balls had been stashed away safely by the time 2,500 dogs and their obedient human entourages overtook the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens this weekend for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The human-to-dog ratio at the tennis center might be 2 to 1, but the power balance favors the dogs. In a tent reserved for grooming, a Lhasa apso was carefully flat-ironed while several miniature poodles were sculpted into sudsy topiaries. This is the second year of the show’s being held in the Flushing section of Queens, with Arthur Ashe Stadium offering deluxe accommodations for the show’s main events.

The Major Supreme Court Cases of 2024No Supreme Court term in recent memory has featured so many cases with the potential to transform American society. In 2015, the Supreme Court limited the sweep of the statute at issue in the case, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. In 2023, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked efforts to severely curb access to the pill, mifepristone, as an appeal moved forward. A series of Supreme Court decisions say that making race the predominant factor in drawing voting districts violates the Constitution. The difference matters because the Supreme Court has said that only racial gerrymandering may be challenged in federal court under the Constitution.

Google launched a new tool that lets publishers opt out of training Google's AI models. It turns out that all this content has been stored in datasets that are the foundation for training powerful AI models, including those from OpenAI, Google, Meta, and others. Part of Google's response has been to launch a new tool that lets websites block the company from using their content for training AI models. BI asked Originality.ai CEO Jonathan Gillham why Google-Extended is being used less than other AI training data-blockers. It's unclear if the company will launch this fully in the future, or how much different it will be from the traditional Google search engine.
