That has forced Remy Cointreau, whose stock has fallen 50% for the year, to slash its full-year guidance and expects another year of double-digit declines in sales. The declines are a “normalization” within the industry, with alcohol sales nearing their pre-Covid levels, according to Marten Lodewijks, IWSR’s president for the US division. Cheaper private labels have had a boon in sales, mirroring a larger trend of customers seeking more affordable options in all aspects of their life. Aldi’s lineup is growing double digits in sales, bucking the broader industry trends of declines, Arlin Zajmi, director of national buying for adult beverages, told CNN. Aldi has seen its wine and beer sales soar.

That’s a problem for Big Beer, which is dealing with flat sales, declining volume and a fickle generation of younger drinkers who are completely ditching the bottle or preferring anything but a regular beer. It’s a non-carbonated drink because “bloating that may come from carbonation is considered a top barrier” for younger drinkers and the trend of “decarbonizing” drinks is blowing up on the app. Last year, it acquired Blue Run Spirits, a cult favorite high-end bourbon and rye whiskey brand, in light of US spirit sales surpassing beer sales. Its aptly titled “Beyond Beer” category is currently a $1.5 billion part of its global business and is helping attract younger, legally aged drinkers. Despite younger drinkers’ hesitance with buying beer and flat sales, Big Beer companies aren’t facing an existential threat.

New York CNN —Anchor Brewing, America’s oldest craft brewer, closed last summer after more than 127 years in business. Anchor closed in July 2023 and its former parent company Sapporo USA put it up for sale after facing years of declining sales. Despite Ulukaya’s excitement about reviving the 127-year-old brand, the craft beer business has been in decline as drinkers shift to spirits and cheaper alternatives. “The brand struggled because it kept relevance with longtime, committed craft beer enthusiasts, but rarely registered with young people or casual drinkers,” Roth said. “Focusing on Anchors legacy, stature, and part of American craft beer history could help the brewery form new emotional connections with drinkers.”

New York CNN —Stella Artois, the nearly century-old brew, isn’t immune to the difficulties facing beer sales, so it’s drafting one of the world’s most recognizable personalities to help the lager return to its former glory: David Beckham. On Tuesday, the Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned brand introduced the former soccer superstar as the new face of its beer, naming Beckham as its “official ambassador” for Stella Artois. David Beckham is the new face of Stella Artois. Beckham joins fellow soccer superstar Lionel Messi in the A-B ambassador portfolio. “Beckham certainly gives Stella Artois the kind of top-tier recognition that A-B has historically leaned on to gain attention,” Sightline’s Roth said.

A local council candidate in Washington State decided not to cast a ballot. AdvertisementA Washington State political candidate decided not to vote for himself, and then lost his election by a single vote, according to local officials. Damion Green ran for a council seat in the city of Rainier, located in Thurston County about 25 miles south of Tacoma. But voting for himself would have been like "stacking a deck in your favor," Green told local newspaper The Seattle Times. A coin toss ultimately decided the race, as local newspaper The Chronicle reported at the time.

New York CNN —In a sea of canned cocktails, Gay Water wants to stand out. In other words, where Bud Light has buckled under pressure as bigotry grows against the LGBTQ+ community, Gay Water’s creator Spencer Hoddeson wants his new boozy brand to be the antithesis of that. The canned cocktail is named after a colloquialism given to the popular mixed drink (vodka and soda) ordered at bars by the gay community. He thought of creating Gay Water about a year ago while on a vacation with his friend that had got a job within the beverage industry. Big onlineHoddeson built up a strong social media following on TikTok and Instagram during Covid-19 and is using some of the money from that (as well as from friends and family) to help fund Gay Water.

New York CNN —Anheuser-Busch will report earnings Thursday, marking the first time it will face Wall Street analysts’ questions since its Bud Light brand erupted in controversy. Sales of Bud Light have tumbled over the past month after the company delivered a custom can to Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender woman with a large Instagram following. The video went viral, with some supporting Mulvaney and the company, and others responding with anti-trans reactions and calls for a Bud Light boycott. The week prior, Bud Light revenue was down 17%, even as sales of rivals Miller Lite and Coors Light increased. Bud Light sales have been declining for years, but this situation has “snowballed” and made its troubles even more pronounced, Roth said.
New York CNN —Bud Light Seltzer has a problem: People still think there’s beer in the spiked seltzer. “We launched Bud Light Seltzer with the Bud Light name in 2020 because it came with immediate benefits in terms of recognizability and distribution,” he said. From Bud Light Seltzer/YouTubeTo that end, Bud Light Seltzer is rolling out a new, year-long ad campaign with the slogan “100% Hard Seltzer, 0% Beer.” The debut TV spot shows a Bud Light Seltzer delivery truck rolling through a brown-colored desert with colorful bubbles floating through the back. In one ad shown during the 2020 Super Bowl, Bud Light Seltzer enlisted rapper Post Malone and showed the inside of his brain trying to decide to either buy Bud Light or Bud Light Seltzer from a convenience store. Sales of Bud Light Seltzer have fallen about 24% last year, the firm said, which is worse than the seltzer category on average, which fell nearly 15%.
