Becker, Minnesota CNN —The smokestacks on the aging Sherco coal power plant tower over gleaming solar panels that stretch across thousands of acres of farmland. The polluting coal plant is on its way out, scheduled for retirement in the next five years. Experts say this is the secret to solving America’s clean energy dilemma: There is more electricity from clean energy waiting to get connected to the grid than the entire amount of energy currently on the grid. A view of Sherco power plant, which has been operating since the 1970s and is slated for full retirement by 2030. But the reality is, it’s there.”From super-polluters to clean energy juggernautsThe answer to supercharging clean energy could lie inside some of the most polluting power plants in the US.

The top prosecutor in Minneapolis has dropped murder charges against a state trooper who fatally shot a motorist last year after a traffic stop, her office said on Sunday, a stunning turnaround in a case that ignited a political firestorm. The trooper, Ryan Londregan, had been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Ricky Cobb II. But the prosecutor, Mary Moriarty, a longtime public defender who was elected Hennepin County attorney in 2022, said she concluded that the evidence was too weak to take to trial. For months, Ms. Moriarty defended the murder charges amid criticism from both Democratic and Republican officials, as well as law enforcement officials. Mr. Cobb, 33, was Black; Trooper Londregan, 27, is white.

But everyday filers could still face an audit — and certain issues are more prone to IRS scrutiny, experts say. Audit rates of individual income tax returns decreased for all income levels from tax years 2010 to 2019, largely due to lower IRS funding, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office. Here are some of the biggest IRS audit red flags. Unreasonable tax breaksAnother red flag could be excessive deductions compared to what's considered normal for your income level, according to Losi. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota state trooper accused in the fatal shooting of motorist Ricky Cobb II can remain free without bail while awaiting trial, a judge ruled Monday during a brief court hearing. Trooper Ryan Londregan must surrender his passport and avoid contact with witnesses and Cobb's relatives, the judge ruled. Seide told Cobb he was under arrest while Londregan reached inside, unlocked the doors and began opening the passenger door. The complaint said Cobb’s car began to slowly move forward. Here's how to report 2022 crypto losses on your tax return
  + stars: | 2023-03-15 | by ( Kate Dore | Cfp | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
But if you're still recovering from last year's losses, it may be possible to score a tax break on your 2022 return. The crypto market plunged by nearly $1.4 trillion in 2022 after a series of bankruptcies, liquidity issues and the collapse of FTX, one of the biggest crypto exchanges. If you're itching to claim a crypto loss on your taxes, there are a few things to know, experts say. Offset gains with crypto lossesOne of the silver linings of plummeting assets is the chance to leverage tax-loss harvesting, or using losses to offset gains. If your crypto losses exceed other investment gains and $3,000 of regular income, you can use the rest in subsequent years, Greene-Lewis said.
Mandatory Credit: Danny Wild-USA TODAY SportsFebruary 21 - Connor Hellebuyck made a season-high 50 saves and the visiting Winnipeg Jets recorded a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night. Kyle Connor had a goal and two assists while Pierre-Luc Dubois added a goal for Winnipeg. The Ducks, who have lost five straight games, got 51 saves from John Gibson, the NHL leader in losses (10-23-6). Pastrnak's 40th goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie with 2:54 remaining in the second period. Charlie McAvoy assisted on all three Boston goals, and Jake DeBrusk scored his second goal in as many games since returning from injuries.
Plus, there's currently no "wash sale rule" for crypto. The rule blocks the tax break if you buy a "substantially identical" asset 30 days before or after the sale. If your crypto losses exceed other investment gains and $3,000 of regular income, you can use the rest in subsequent years, Greene-Lewis said. But it's easy to lose track of carryover losses and miss future opportunities to lower taxes, she warned. If you wind up getting, say, 10% back after claiming a bad debt deduction, that 10% becomes regular income.
[1/8] Jan 27, 2023; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes center Martin Necas (88) celebrates his overtime goal against the San Jose Sharks at PNC Arena. San Jose's Michael Eyssimont scored a go-ahead goal with 8:45 remaining in what was a wild third period. Eyssimont's second goal of the season combined with an assist earlier in the third period had the Sharks on the verge of snapping a three-game losing streak. Kings 4, Panthers 3Adrian Kempe and Viktor Arvidsson scored short-handed goals, leading Los Angeles to a win over Florida in Sunrise, Fla. Devils 3, Stars 2 (OT)Jack Hughes scored his second goal of the game 20 seconds into overtime to give New Jersey a road victory over Dallas.
But audits have been rare, according to Ryan Losi, a certified public accountant and executive vice president of CPA firm Piascik. "I have maybe two or three a year, and that's with 600 clients," he said. Typically, the IRS uses software to assign a numeric score to returns, and when the rating is high enough, it may be flagged for an audit, explained Michael Prinzo, managing principal of tax at CliftonLarsonAllen. During the fiscal year 2022, 85% of IRS audits occurred by correspondence, according to the Syracuse University report. Michael Prinzo managing principal of tax at CliftonLarsonAllen

Photo by LanaStock via Getty ImagesWhy crypto investors may have a tax billDespite recent losses, "gains from earlier in the year are still on the books," Gordon said. Typically, crypto trading is more active when the market is going up, and that's when you are more likely to incur gains, he said. If you're sitting on crypto losses, there may be a silver lining: the chance to offset 2022 gains or carry losses forward to reduce profits in future years, Gordon explained. The strategy, known as tax-loss harvesting, may apply to digital currency gains, or other assets, such as year-end mutual fund payouts.
