Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Sunday defended keeping Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court, after some Democrats have reportedly considered pressuring her to step down while President Joe Biden is still in office. He added that he’s heard “a little bit” of talk from Democratic senators about asking Sotomayor, who is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, to step aside. Sonia Sotomayor, who is 70, is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. If Sotomayor were to die during Trump’s term, she would likely be replaced by a conservative justice, pushing the now 6-3 conservative court further to the right. She died in September 2020 and Trump, then serving his first term, appointed the conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace her, leading to the court’s current conservative makeup.

WASHINGTON — Republicans are gearing up to lock in their remake of the judiciary under President-elect Donald Trump and a new Senate majority, including potentially installing several more conservative Supreme Court justices. Conservatives are prepared for Supreme Court retirements, with the most attention on Justice Samuel Alito, 74. GOP won't pursue Supreme Court ethics rulesTrump already transformed the federal courts in his first term, appointing 54 appeals court judges and 174 district court judges, many of whom are closely linked with the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group. Biden has made his own mark on the judiciary, appointing 210 district and appeals court judges in total, including 44 appeals court judges, falling just short of Trump’s total. “We’ll quit beating up the Supreme Court every time we don’t like the decision they make,” he said.

Women's rights activist Lilly Ledbetter has died, according to a family representative. Ledbetter, best known for advocating for equal pay for women, died as a result of respiratory failure on Saturday night. But Democrats in Congress — urged on by a dissenting opinion from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — fought to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became the first bill Barack Obama signed into law as president in 2009. A film about her life, called "Lilly" and starring Patricia Clarkson as Ledbetter, also premiered recently at the Hamptons International Film Festival.

Assuming the Senate continues confirming pending nominees when it returns in November, the next president is poised to inherit the smallest number of judicial vacancies since when George H.W. CNN —The federal criminal sex trafficking case against Sean “Diddy” Combs has been assigned a new judge. Before joining the law firm, he worked as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Combs’ case was first randomly assigned to Judge Andrew Carter, who was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2011. Combs is currently incarcerated and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York while awaiting his criminal trial. He was arrested earlier this month and charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution, and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Obama enacted DACA; Trump tried to end itThe DACA policy was enacted after bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform efforts failed for the umpteenth time. Nearly 600,000 people have sought protected status under the program, which defers but does not necessarily end any immigration action against them. The Trump administration tried to end the DACA program in 2017, but the effort eventually failed at the Supreme Court in 2020. Instead, Trump hit pause on new applications, something the Biden administration then reversed. The much more modest bipartisan effort pushed by Biden earlier this year would not have helped the undocumented spouses of citizens and their children.

Thomas received 103 gifts with a total value of more than $2.4 million between 2004 and 2023, the judicial reform group Fix the Court said in a report Thursday. Fix the Court's analysis found that Alito accepted 16 gifts worth a combined $170,095. Counting those gifts, Thomas' total two-decade haul is valued at nearly $4.2 million. The value and number of gifts Thomas received also eclipsed those accepted by eight retired or dead Supreme Court justices whose tenures overlapped his service on the court, which began in 1991. Antonin Scalia, a conservative justice who died in 2016 while on the court, accepted 67 gifts worth about $210,000 during his tenure, which began in 1986.

This is not the first time Alito has found himself in hot water over displaying a controversial flag on his property. The upside-down flag, a signal of distress, was adopted by Trump supporters who believed the false claim that the election had been stolen. (Alito said his wife had raised the upside-down flag in response to a disagreement with a neighbor. The discovery also comes at a time when the Supreme Court will be making a decision about Trump’s claims of sweeping presidential immunity, his get-out-of-jail-free card for the federal cases he faces. “The notion that the Supreme Court can be trusted to be an arbiter above partisan politics has suffered major blows in recent years.

When asked about the transition to flying commercial planes, Claiborne stresses that “a pilot is a pilot.”“You’re in different type organizations, but you’re still a pilot,” she adds. So this is an opportunity for her to really enjoy herself.”Increasing diversityClaiborne is committed to increasing pilot diversity and will continue to mentor young women. It’s estimated that there are less than 150 Black women pilots in the US, and Claiborne feels a huge responsibility as one of them. While this may be the end of her commercial flying career, Claiborne isn’t necessarily saying “goodbye” to piloting forever, and would love to fly a World War II aircraft one day.

CNN —Top Republican senators are defending Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito as the conservative justice became embroiled in a second flag controversy, even as some Democrats call for Alito to recuse himself from key matters pending before the high court. “I just think Democrats are determined to harass members of the Supreme Court.
