The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 11 miles (18 kilometers). Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center confirmed the epicenter was in Jajarkot, which is about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of the capital, Kathmandu. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 killed some 9,000 people and damaged about 1 million structures.

Officials said 99 people were killed in Jajarkot and 38 in neighbouring Rukum West district, both in Karnali province. At least 85 people were injured in Rukum West and 55 in Jajarkot, an official in the prime minister's office said. Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold, open grounds because they were too scared to go in into the cracked houses as aftershocks struck," Sharma said. KATHMANDU, Nepal — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook northwestern Nepal on Friday night, killing at least 37 people and injuring dozens more, according to officials. As rescuers searched the mountainous villages where the earthquake struck, officials cautioned that the death toll was expected to rise, noting that communications were cut off with many of the affected areas. The earthquake killed at least 20 people in Rukum District, where numerous houses collapsed, a police official, Narvaraj Bhattarai, said over the telephone. In neighboring Jajarkot District, 17 people were confirmed dead, according to Harish Chandra Sharma, a government official.
