Bidders interested in acquiring the media company founded by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones will battle it out at a bankruptcy auction Wednesday, potentially silencing his Infowars broadcasting platform for good. "All you leftists celebrating the end of Alex Jones and Infowars, you're fools," he said. Jay Westbrook, a University of Texas bankruptcy law professor, said the ultimate goal would be to earn a "maximum return for the victims." Jones, 50, founded Infowars, which operates under Free Speech Systems, in 1999. "Despite the judgment, Alex Jones still has a First Amendment right to speak his mind and continue to speak about anything he wants," he said.

Ron DeSantis is campaigning for president, touting his record in Florida and dragging Walt Disney World through the mud everywhere he goes. Then, DeSantis lobs an incendiary accusation: Disney, by opposing the schools bill, was promoting the "sexualization of children." Part of Disney's hurdle in the courts would be that DeSantis' statements are his own opinion. Similarly, even though DeSantis appears ready keep raising Disney at every campaign stop, a defamation lawsuit would take on another dimension that gets loads of news coverage. Even though Disney would be the plaintiff in a defamation lawsuit, materials uncovered during discovery could put Disney in the position of defending its internal communications or business practices.

The voting technology company made the eye-popping damages claim as part of its 2021 lawsuit, which alleges Fox destroyed its reputation by airing falsehoods. A Dominion spokesperson said in a statement that the evidence will show Dominion was a "valuable, rapidly growing business" when Fox began "endorsing baseless lies" about its machines. "Following Fox’s defamatory statements, Dominion’s business suffered enormously, and its claim for compensatory damages is based on industry-standard valuation metrics and conservative methodologies," the statement read. Four different pre-election valuations of Dominion in 2020 averaged $226 million, Fox said, citing exhibits that have not been made public. If the jury concluded that Fox defamed Dominion but decided Dominion's business losses were minimal, it could still hit the company with significant punitive damages.
It also comes three months after a Texas jury awarded two Sandy Hook parents $49.3 million in a similar case. An economist in the Texas case estimated that Jones is personally worth between $135 million and $270 million. “No bankruptcy judge would allow Alex Jones and his dad to stand in line in front of the plaintiffs,” Myers said. 'EGREGIOUS' CONDUCTInfowars founder Alex Jones speaks to the media after appearing at his Sandy Hook defamation trial at Connecticut Superior Court in Waterbury, Connecticut, U.S., October 4, 2022. D’Amico said a billion-dollar verdict is appropriate given the uniquely tragic circumstances of the case and egregious nature of Jones’ conduct.
Alexi Rosenfeld | Getty ImagesNext week, Maria Bartiromo will join the parade of Fox personalities who are being called to answer questions in Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against the network. Dominion has argued that Fox Corp. 's Fox News and Fox Business made false claims that its voting machines rigged the results of the 2020 election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. But in December, the Delaware judge overseeing the Dominion case denied Fox News' request to have the case dismissed. Fox has asked the court to keep all of the collected materials private, claiming that Dominion mischaracterized what the documents show as actual malice.
