Former President Donald Trump plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he faced an assassination attempt in July, for a rally next month, according to three sources familiar with the campaign’s schedule. Trump has long teased a return to the town where he was shot in the ear during an assassination attempt on July 13. It was not immediately clear whether the Oct. 5 rally will take place at the same venue in Butler. The gunman from the assassination attempt, identified as Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement on July 13. Trump was targeted in a second apparent assassination attempt in West Palm Beach this month when shots were fired near the former president's golf course where he was playing.

The man charged in connection with an apparent assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Florida this month dropped off a box at a person’s home that included a letter that declared, "This was an assassination attempt," a court document revealed Monday. The note came to light in a U.S. District Court filing asking that Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, be held in pre-trial detention. Law enforcement was contacted by a civilian on Sept. 18 who said that Routh had dropped off a box at his residence several months earlier, the filing said. The witness opened the box after learning of the Sept. 15 incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The area featured an opening in the bushes behind the palm trees, which is easily accessible from the public sidewalk.

CNN —The man who authorities say sat with a rifle in the trees where Donald Trump was golfing earlier this month in West Palm Beach, Florida, previously wrote a letter stating “this was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump,” according to a new filing by federal prosecutors. One letter, addressed to “The World” said: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. Routh, 58, was charged with two firearm offenses last week after allegedly fleeing the Trump International Golf Course. Routh’s recent background included a stint in Ukraine, where he unsuccessfully tried to be recruited to fight Russia, as well as time in Hawaii working in construction.
