White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday defended President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, despite telling the press multiple times that the president had no such plans. She added, "Hunter was singled out, and because his last name was Biden, because he was the president’s son. Hunter Biden, the president's only surviving son, was found guilty in June on federal gun charges and pleaded guilty in a separate tax evasion case in September. During a White House press briefing on Nov. 7, Jean-Pierre again dismissed a question about whether Biden had planned to pardon his son. Asked Monday about the pardon, first lady Jill Biden said, “Of course I support the pardon of my son."

LUANDA, Angola — President Joe Biden will make history Monday as he becomes the first American head of state to visit the West African nation of Angola, where he will showcase U.S.-backed infrastructure projects designed to link three nations. Biden will also announce initiatives related to global health and security cooperation, among other things, a senior administration official said Friday. “We’re preparing the ground for eventually reaching all the way to Tanzania, connecting the Atlantic and Indian oceans,” a second administration official said Friday, of the system which also runs through Zambia and Congo. U.S. investment, the senior administration official said, is spurring economic growth for people in Africa in ways that Chinese spending isn’t. Mr. Biden said, as recently as June, that he wouldn’t pardon Hunter or commute his sentence, and his press secretary reiterated that he had no plans to pardon Hunter after last month’s election. It is “not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted” and encompasses the period when the younger Mr. Biden joined the board of Burisma. Mr. Biden sought to define his presidency in counterpoint to the corruption and indecency of the first Trump years. With the pardon of his son, Mr. Biden added his name to the roll call of presidents who dishonored their office by misusing the pardon power. By changing his plan to issue this pardon, Mr. Biden himself seemed to recognize how wrong it was, and is.

CNN —Australian police seized the country’s largest haul of cocaine aboard a fishing boat that had broken down near the coast of Queensland, arresting 13 people alleged to be part of a drug-smuggling syndicate. Authorities tracked a recreational fishing boat as it traveled out to sea where it allegedly met a mothership in international waters to fetch the cocaine – some 2.34 metric tons with a street value of nearly half a billion dollars. Police seized their chance to board the boat, arresting two men at sea in a joint investigation between federal and local forces. Police found 2.34 metric tons of cocaine wrapped in bales with roped netting around them on a recreational fishing vessel. Among the haul was 225 metric tons of cocaine, 5 tons of which was found aboard a semi-submersible vessel plying a marine trafficking route from Colombia to Australia, according to the Colombian Navy.

CNN —At least 200 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on northern Gaza Saturday, according to local health officials, as the United Nations said it would pause aid deliveries through the enclave’s main crossing after more of its trucks were stolen. The figure is thought to be an underestimate, as much of northern Gaza is inaccessible and many casualties never arrive at a hospital to be counted. A source involved in transferring aid inside Gaza told CNN that a further five trucks loaded with flour were stolen near the crossing Sunday. Israeli authorities “must ensure aid flows into Gaza safely and must refrain from attacks on humanitarian workers,” he said. CNN has reached out to COGAT, the Israeli agency responsible for approving aid into Gaza, for comment.

I understand why people track their kidsMost people track their children for one of two reasons: to ensure their safety or to ensure they're going where they said they were. But that extra step feels like we're communicating and respecting each other, rather than me stealthily watching him on my phone. In the year since, the rebels have menaced key Middle East shipping routes with missiles and drones, disrupting maritime trade. However, the ongoing Houthi attacks have caused a notable decline in activity along that critical route, forcing ships to make longer and more expensive trips around Africa. Over the past year, the Navy has fired off hundreds of munitions in its Middle East operations, costing over $1.8 billion and draining the Pentagon of key missiles that are expensive to procure. Officials stress that Washington will continue to act against the Houthis to stop their attacks. Even as some warships left the Middle East earlier this month, other vessels have already moved in to take their place.

UK lawmakers vote to allow assisted dying
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.

CNN —When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live following their engagement in 1998, she had a very specific requirement for their marital home: A view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The photographer has captured the spectacle almost every year since, missing the parade just twice in over a quarter of a century. Thomas the Tank Engine, the Kool-Aid Man and Boss Baby are just some of the dozens of other outsized characters Kahane has pictured floating slowly past her home — often at eye-level. Some shots were taken from inside the apartment, with kids seen enjoying the surreal view of parade characters — from Sonic the Hedgehog to Pikachu, gleefully riding a Poké Ball-inspired sled — looming outside.

The average flight today from Kennedy Airport to LAX is slower than it was in 1995 in every conceivable way. Planes face longer delays leaving the gate; take more time taxiing before taking off; and spend more time in the air. But paradoxically, even with an average rise in travel time of 18 minutes, the percentage of flights on this route arriving after the scheduled arrival time has decreased. In 1995, the arrivals were behind schedule 51 percent of the time; today it’s just 37 percent.
