Even with recent rotation away from megacap tech stocks, there may still be a case for investing in thematic tech exchange-traded funds. Roundhill Investments runs the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT), which is up 13.8% year to date as of Friday's market close. But despite recent volatility in the group, the firm's CEO Dave Mazza thinks the investment thesis is still intact. Pointing to some of CHAT's under-the-radar artificial intelligence plays, Mazza waived off concerns that thematic ETFs may be too narrow in scope. "There are companies like Dell in the portfolio and others, ServiceNow and Salesforce , who are using AI and integrating AI," he said.

The best-performing exchange-traded funds in the second half will likely be decided by broader shifts in the markets and economy. Even with mounting uncertainty, however, there are some types of ETFs that could emerge as winners. There may be a stronger case to invest in single stocks over exchange-traded funds in the weight loss space. With just two players currently at the forefront of the U.S. obesity drug market, ProShares' Simeon Hyman questions the relevance of weight loss ETFs for investors looking to buy into the industry. "If the benefits are going to incumbents, then maybe there isn't a theme per se that needs to be exploited." Strategas' Sohn also suggested that ETFs based on themes, rather than sectors or indices, might be falling out of favor with investors. So far in 2024, Novo Nordisk has gained 29% and Eli Lilly is up 30%, as of Wednesday's close.

It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., June 29, 2023. Retail traders, who used to band together on online platforms to chase highly shorted shares during the days of easy money, have been seeing a reversal of fortunes as rising rates diminish their holdings in high-risk, high-return assets. "Seasonality suggests that retail investors are unlikely to support any year-end rally, except for big-tech," Vanda's Mantle said. Despite their overall slow buying, there were spurts of activity where retail traders chased sharp rallies in some small cap names - a typical trading strategy.
