New research identifies the 10 best-performing US stocks since 1926. Of 29,000 US stocks traded since 1926, most had negative returns, but top performers showed consistent gains. Of course, identifying the 10 best-performing stocks for the next 100 years is nearly impossible, as the paper's author points out. "The majority (51.6%) of these stocks had negative cumulative returns," finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder of Arizona State University wrote. Bessembinder also observed that the 10 best-performing stocks delivered consistently modest annualized gains, reinforcing the slow and steady mantra championed by long-term investors.

CNN —An oil spill affecting Singapore has spread beyond a luxury beach resort to a marine reserve and other parts of the island as the authorities intensify cleanup efforts. The oil spilled into the city-state’s waters after a Netherlands-flagged dredger, Vox Maxima, hit Singapore-flagged bunker vessel, Marine Honor, on Friday afternoon, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The oil spill has spread from the busy Pasir Panjang Terminal cargo port, less than 10 kilometers (six miles) from Sentosa, the country’s popular resort island home to luxury hotels, golf courses and Universal Studios Singapore. Oil covers Sentosa's Tanjong Beach in Singapore on June 16, 2024. Measuring about 13 kilometers long (8 miles) long, 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) wide and dotted with several small islands, it is one of the world’s busiest commercial waterways where around 1,000 ships pass through every day.

Since then, the company's stock buyback programs have reduced its total share count to 15.44 billion, and at current prices, this stock buyback program would retire an additional 600 million shares. In Maybank Investment's fengshui report for 2024, its head of research Thilan Wickramasinghe, along with fengshui master Ken Koh, take a look at which sectors will outperform and which will face headwinds in the Year of the Dragon. 2024 is the year of the wood dragon and will be "unique," according to the report. Earth, metal and fireSectors under the earth element will also benefit from the dominant fire element, Maybank said, identifying sector winners as waste management, real estate, data warehousing and urban farming. "Despite rising interest rates and inflationary costs, the dominant Earth industries have shown resilience and continue to break new grounds," the Maybank report said. Most notably, in industries under the metal element — such as banking, engineering, mining and automotive — the wood element will be prominent and will bring prosperity to the metal industries.

CNN —What if you could help nature by simply going out for a run? That’s the idea behind Rewild the Run, a 3D-printed shoe outsole that fits over regular sneakers. The hope is that by spreading seeds, shoes fitted with the outsole could help with rewilding, a form of nature restoration that enables the environment to take care of itself, with reduced human intervention. “How will these shoes distinguish between the seeds of native and non-native plant species?”Carver is skeptical about the principle of urban rewilding itself. She also shares the vision of rewilding taking place at scale and by giving nature space, and says that would be the ideal in cities such as London.

Private rental costs in Singapore rose 30% in 2022, according to official data. Photo: roslan rahman/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSingapore, Hong Kong’s longtime rival, is having a moment as Hong Kong struggles with the fallout from its political crackdown and China sends decidedly mixed signals on its own openness to foreign capital. The Southeast Asian city-state is also dealing with the sudden downsides of success: namely an epic surge in housing prices. To keep the march it has stolen on Hong Kong it will need to tame its housing market—and demonstrate that it truly is neutral territory in the intensifying competition between the U.S. and China.
Tangaraju Suppiah, a 46-year-old Singaporean, was hanged early on Wednesday in Changi Prison and the family have received a death certificate, his sister Leelavathy Suppiah told CNN. Tangaraju was first sentenced to death in 2018 for “abetting the trafficking of more than one kilogram of cannabis (1,017.9 grams),” according to a statement from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). The court found he was in phone communication with two other men caught trying to smuggle cannabis into Singapore. “As is the case for many people currently on death row in Singapore, Tangaraju was forced to represent himself to seek a review of the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold his conviction. Singapore has a strong reputation as a rule of law country so this concerning omission is not normal,” Perrett added.
Australia’s defense minister said the country’s navy needed enhanced lethality. Photo: roslan rahman/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSYDNEY—A wide-ranging review of Australia’s military found that the key U.S ally needs to quickly overhaul its armed forces and focus more on capabilities such as long-range missiles, amid concerns that rising tensions between the U.S. and China could increase the chance of a conflict in the region. Australian officials said they agreed with the review’s conclusion that the country’s military isn’t fully fit for purpose in the current strategic environment. The defense industry minister, Pat Conroy, said the revamped army will eventually be able to fire weapons that can hit targets some 300 miles away, versus 25 miles now.
