At midnight, as the calendar switched to July 1 and two of the country’s richest athletic departments joined its most dominant league, college football had officially entered its super-conference era. Unbeaten but somewhat unremarkable this season, Oregon is meanwhile trying to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time in a decade. However, Ohio State versus Oregon in a game that counts not as a non-conference game, or a Rose Bowl matchup on New Year’s Day, but in the Big Ten standings? Their stated aim is to promote more matchups more often between otherwise separated blue-blood programs — games just like Oregon vs. Ohio State. The summit was a reminder that the remaking of college football hasn’t ended.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — When the Super Bowl was in the balance in the fourth quarter a year ago, coach Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs put a twist on their frequent pre-snap motion. Two wide-open touchdown passes that helped the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 for a Super Bowl title. “He gives you all different types of looks, funky looking plays, different misdirections,” 49ers All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner said. “I think to put it simply, they do a really good job of marrying their run plays to their pass plays,” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill said. But with more defenses disguising coverages and switching after the snap, the motion can confuse defenses and create breakdowns in coverage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Underneath his umbrella, NFL legend Dan Marino stood nearly drenched on the sideline watching Prince’s epic “Purple Rain” Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007 during a torrential Miami downpour. “The halftime performance has come a long way,” said the Hall of Fame quarterback who played 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins and competed in the 1985 Super Bowl. His show will be vastly different than the NFL’s first Super Bowl halftime show in 1967, which featured marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University, a historically Black college, along with hundreds of flying pigeons, thousands of balloons and two soaring men wearing jetpacks. After the inaugural Super Bowl, the NFL kept bringing back other marching bands, drill teams, signed Chubby Checker and Up with People, an organization that stage positive thinking through dance and song performances. Dudowsky recalled when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said the “Super Bowl of music is the Super Bowl.” He said the halftime show has been able to grow thanks to the NFL's ability to adjust to the current culture and giving deserving artists the platform to express their artistry.

When Jim Harbaugh took a pay cut from Michigan after the 2020 season, getting another chance to be an NFL head coach seemed like a long shot for him. If Nick Saban had retired after the 2022 season it’s doubtful Kalen DeBoer would have been his replacement at Alabama. He leaves Michigan after three straight seasons of beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten and reaching the playoff. Harbaugh has been a head coach in college and the NFL for 20 years, including a three-year stint with FCS San Diego before landing the Stanford job in 2007. “I knew this was a thing that, not that I had to do, but that I really wanted to do.

The Jim Harbaugh derby for NFL teams is about to heat up. A week after leading the University of Michigan to a national title in the College Football Playoff, Harbaugh will meet with the Los Angeles Chargers about their head coach vacancy this week, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Harbaugh, who previously coached in the NFL, has a prior relationship with the Chargers and the Spanos family that owns it. To prepare for a possible NFL return, Harbaugh recently hired Don Yee as his new agent. Despite leading Michigan to its first national title since 1997, it was a frustrating year for Harbaugh.

The two men became friends at Syracuse University in the late 1980s. The hunt for vintage became their obsession. In those days, secondhand meant second-rate to much of the fashion set, and the duo saw themselves as downtown entrepreneurs whose mission it was to preach the gospel of vintage. “The stigma was that people felt it was beneath them to buy something used,” Mr. Weisser said, “but we saw wearing vintage as giving someone individuality.”Their first regulars included Jean Paul Gaultier and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
