He had a $1.5 million life insurance policy, which my mom used as leverage to get a loan for his care. My mom's experience convinced me to buy a 20-year, $500,000 term life policy of my own, at $28 a month. That math looks grim, and it would look a whole lot worse if my stepfather didn't have a $1.5 million term life insurance policy. TSMC's growth was driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence technology. But the market is questioning whether the euphoria over AI and AI chips is sustainable. AdvertisementChip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company just reported strong growth, thanks to continued enthusiasm for artificial intelligence — even amid persistent questions over the return on investment from the technology. The Taiwanese company's blockbuster results came after Dutch chip equipment maker ASML — a supplier to TSMC — reported guidance on Tuesday that disappointed investors and triggered a sell-off in chip stocks. But it doesn't mean AI demand is fizzling.

ASML on Tuesday offered the first glimpse into how U.S. restrictions on exports of its advanced chip manufacturing tools to China will impact its sales in the Asian country. The Netherlands-based chip equipment maker said in its earnings report Tuesday, which was released a day early due to a "technical error," that it expects net sales for 2025 to come in between 30 billion euros and 35 billion euros ($32.7 billion and $38.1 billion). ASML is a critical part of the global chip supply chain. While third-quarter net sales at the firm reached 7.5 billion euros — beating expectations — net bookings came in at 2.6 billion euros ($2.83 billion), the company said.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.

"Primary health care is a low margin business," said Arielle Trzcinski, a principal analyst covering health care at research firm. "Compared to what they see in traditional retail, health care is a fundamentally different business," Trzcinski said, citing the challenges of navigating insurance companies and administrative burdens that health care brings. In-store health clinics can be profitable and viable, and retailers are experimenting with piecemeal approaches tailored to the local market.

"Consensus expectations still call for 7% sales growth next year, which should come down today," Stifel analysts said in a note. Dassen said ASML still had an order backlog of 35 billion euros and a strong 2025 would follow an uncertain 2024, given its customers' expansion plans in Asia, the United States and Europe. After California lawmakers passed a landmark fast-food bill, an independent advocacy group of McDonald's owners is pushing back against what it says will be a "devastating financial blow" to its franchisees in the state, according to a memo to its membership viewed by CNBC. It includes a wage floor of $20 for California workers at fast-food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide, starting April 1. The National Owners Association, an independent advocacy group of more than 1,000 McDonald's owners, projects in the memo the bill will cost each restaurant in the state $250,000 annually. McDonald's sent its own letter to its restaurant system on Monday, which was viewed by CNBC. The new legislation eliminated the threat of joint franchisor-franchisee liability, which McDonald's said would "destroy the franchise model in California and strip thousands of restaurant owners of the right to run their business."

CNN —Prior to a truce between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf last month, an adviser to the Saudi Public Investment Fund proposed that Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy could own LIV Golf teams and play in the Saudi-backed tour, according to a 276-page report released by the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on Tuesday. In an April 26 meeting, PCP Capital Partners, a Saudi PIF adviser, presented a slideshow to PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne and PGA Tour Policy Board Chairman Edward Herlihy entitled “The Best of Both Worlds.”The slideshow proposed that McIlroy and Woods would own LIV Golf teams and participate in at least 10 LIV Golf events, documents showed. A May 24 email also revealed PGA Tour officials intended to fire LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman after the merger. Norman has been an advocate for the rival Saudi tour and a fierce public critic of the PGA Tour. The framework agreement between the Saudis and the PGA Tour needs to be approved by the PGA Tour’s 10-member policy board.

In the early 2000s, Roger Dahle attended an outdoor pancake breakfast cooked on a commercial flattop at his local Rotary Club, a civic organization, in Utah. “I love cooking breakfast outdoors, but you couldn’t buy an outdoor griddle for home use,” Mr. Dahle said. He experimented with a variety of cooking surfaces, settling on the same material used in woks: carbon steel. He mounted it on a cart like a gas grill, with propane to fire the burners, and named it Blackstone, after a favorite local restaurant. “People originally bought the Blackstone to cook breakfast,” Mr. Dahle said.
ASML China sales dip in Q1 but seen stronger next nine months

AMSTERDAM, April 19 (Reuters) - Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML Holding NV (ASML.AS) expects sales to mainland China to pick up for the remainder of 2023 following a dip in the first quarter, it said on Wednesday. ASML's sales in mainland China, its third biggest market after Taiwan and South Korea, have been the subject of a high profile geopolitical tug-of-war. Dassen reiterated that would affect one slice of potential exports to mainland China, but demand from chip makers who make slightly older chips remains strong. "Domestic China accounts for more than 20% in our backlog," despite a dip in first quarter sales to about 8% of the company's total, he said in a statement accompanying the earnings. "That means you will see a significant pick up of the sales into domestic China for the quarters to come this year."
