He marveled at the efficiency of the African oil palm, which can produce five times as much edible oil per acre as corn or soy. As environmental activists raised the alarm about the palm oil industry's toll on the tropical forests of Southeast Asia two decades ago, Unilever, the world's largest buyer of palm oil, teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund and other parties to establish the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Six years later, as a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, they sold that operation to Felda Global Ventures, the third-largest palm oil company in the world, for almost $200 million. Not only was García's government offering sweetheart deals to foreign investors under its National Plan to Promote Oil Palm, but the country had more than 3 million acres suitable for oil palm. It was Washington Bolívar, the activist who had helped Ucayali's Indigenous communities fight the palm oil plantations.

School board members refuse to cede any ground. One was a discordant school board meeting in September that stretched over nearly five hours. The other was a school board candidates forum that drew a full room in October. Since then, the school board has hired its own private security to stand guard at meetings. While she does not have proof, Drane thinks it was retaliation for her vocal resistance against the new school board majority.

Some senior Liberal party leaders, however, have broken ranks and supported the Voice referendum. "The Voice delivers recognition and respect to Indigenous Australians in the manner they have sought," Turnbull said in an opinion piece in The Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday. In the most recent referendum in 1999, Australians voted against changing the constitution to establish Australia as a republic. "I’m just trying to vote yes for the recognition of the real owners of Australia," Sydney resident Oscar Rodas, who was at one of the campaigns, told Reuters.

Norberto Duarte | AFP | Getty ImagesParaguay's ruling candidate Santiago Pena, 44, scored a big win in the country's presidential election on Sunday, tightening the conservative Colorado Party's political grip in the country and defusing fears about the end of diplomatic ties with Taiwan. "Thank you for this Colorado victory, thank you for this Paraguayan victory," Pena said in a speech. Colorado and right-wing party candidates also performed strongly in congressional elections and governor races, with some provinces recording a historic Colorado majority over opposition rivals. The Colorado Party has dominated politics in the landlocked South American country since the 1950s.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The seizure of more than 660,000 counterfeit Adderall pills containing methamphetamine has led to charges against one man, federal authorities in Rhode Island announced Monday. It is believed to be the largest seizure of methamphetamine-laced fake Adderall pills in the U.S., as well as among the largest seizures of methamphetamine in DEA New England Field Division history, he said. “The quantity of methamphetamine represented by this seizure — methamphetamine that was packaged, prepped and ready to flow out onto the street to devastating effect on our communities — is staggering,” Cunha said. Officials believe the methamphetamine originated in Mexico, according to Brian Boyle, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England office. “With the potency of these fake pills, it only takes one pill to ruin your life,” he said.
