It's September – and that means it's prime time to think about maximizing after-tax returns as the year winds down. Of course, there may be a price to pay for that performance: Uncle Sam will want his share of taxes. Here are a few steps that could help you hold onto more of your portfolio's returns this year. Munis spin out income that's free of federal taxes, and they may be exempt from state levies if the investor resides in the issuing state. By directly giving low basis highly appreciated stock (instead of selling the position and donating cash proceeds), you avoid incurring the capital gains tax.

CNN —Do you ever find yourself comparing the size of your child with those of their classmates and worrying about their health? In her new book, “Kids Thrive at Every Size,” Castle aims to offer a new model for assessing and addressing kids’ health. Weight-focused versus whole child healthThe way children’s health has been assessed has often centered greatly on their size and shape, Castle said. “Or we look at a child with a larger body and say, ‘Hey, that doesn’t fit our norm.’”There are a few problems with this approach. … You choose what you want, but fruit is really important to your overall eating pattern, and it’s important for you to get some at school,’” Castle added.

Comparing yourself to Olympians is a losing game

So what better time to shame yourself about your fitness and body image than during a gathering of the world’s top athletes? But doing so is a losing game. Not everyone can optimize their body for performance the way Olympians do, experts say. Optimizing their bodies for performance is a full-time job for Olympians, she said. You can be inspired to set healthy physical goalsThere are positive ways you can be inspired by Olympians, however, and these can help you approach your goals, Mason said.

Opinion | Should Democrats Press Biden to Step Aside?

To the Editor:Re “The Democratic Party Must Speak the Plain Truth to the President” (editorial, July 10):Democrats cannot have it both ways. Every day that passes without Democrats formulating a new plan to defeat Donald Trump decreases their chances of success. They must speak boldly: President Biden can indeed be part of the plan to defend democracy from Donald Trump, but to do so he must step aside and pass the torch. To the Editor:I am frustrated by the recent New York Times headlines, and especially the editorials, calling for President Biden to step down as a candidate. Donald Trump is the one who should step down.

ARFID: the eating disorder you haven’t heard of

Now 8 years old, Hannah is being treated for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, or ARFID. Unlike eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia nervosa, this diagnosis isn’t concerned with body shape or size, said Kate Dansie, clinical director of the Eating Disorder Center in Rockville, Maryland. Instead, people with ARFID are very limited in the foods they feel safe and comfortable eating, Dansie said. While an estimated 9% of the US population will have an eating disorder at some point, studies suggest that somewhere between 0.5% and 5% of the population has ARFID, according to the National Eating Disorders Association. One way to spot the difference is the level of impairment and anxiety that comes with facing a new food, Murray said.

CNN —There are plenty of reasons why many health professionals don’t want you on a restrictive diet. But how do you know when a diet is restrictive or when you are just making choices with health or longevity in mind? In those cases that aren’t as clear-cut, here are three questions to ask yourself about your diet, Rollin and Mokari said. Feeling as if you can’t control yourself around particular foods might be a sign that you are being too restrictive in your diet, Rollin said. And that can be physically restrictive by not allowing yourself to eat the food or mentally restrictive by shaming yourself while eating it and afterward, she said.

Orthorexia: The clean eating disorder

It was 20 years of an eating disorder and the anxiety and stress that comes with it culminating into one moment, he said. But clinicians are seeing a rise in orthorexia among patients, said therapist Jennifer Rollin, founder of The Eating Disorder Center in Rockville, Maryland. Orthorexia is a fixation on eating “clean,” as defined by a set of rules dependent on certain individuals and the context they live in, said Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, an eating disorder physician and founder and medical director of the Gaudiani Clinic in Denver. When looking at therapy, check for not only an eating disorder specialist, but one with experience with orthorexia, Rollin said. People with orthorexia may find themselves with a team that includes therapists and dietitians, similar to patients in treatment for other eating disorders, Rollin said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of Israel rallied by the thousands on the National Mall under heavy security Tuesday, voicing solidarity in the fight against Hamas and crying “never again." The Homeland Security Department designated the march a “level 1” security event, the highest classification in its system and one usually used for the Super Bowl and other major events, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The designation means the event required substantial law enforcement assistance from federal agencies, the officials said. The officials were not authorized to discuss details of the law enforcement bulletin publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Many of the demonstrators at the “March for Israel” wore Israeli flags wrapped around their shoulders, flowing behind them, or held small Israeli flags in their hands.

Higher yields on certificates of deposit are out there, but you'll have to venture beyond your favorite bank to get them. "There could be as much as a 50-basis point difference going to a brokered CD," he said. Brokered vs. bank offerings With a bank CD, the investor goes directly to the institution to buy the instrument. For instance, brokered CDs purchased via Vanguard begin at 1 to 3 months and go out beyond 10 years. The value of the CD will fluctuate with interest rates, with the price declining as yields run higher.

Opinion | To Prosecute or Not to Prosecute Trump

To the Editor:Re “The Prosecution of Trump May Have Terrible Consequences,” by Jack Goldsmith (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 10), about the charges brought by Jack Smith:Mr. Goldsmith argues that the prosecution of Mr. Trump will further erode the already diminished belief that Republicans have in our justice system and may “inspire tit-for-tat investigations of presidential actions by future Congresses and by administrations of the opposing party.”He may be correct. But the integrity of our democracy is at stake. As the New York University law professors Ryan Goodman and Andrew Weissman have written, “To not have brought this case against Mr. Trump would have been an act of selective nonprosecution” because so many foot soldiers have been prosecuted for their Jan. 6 attempt to disrupt our government. To the Editor:Jack Goldsmith studiously ignores a key factor of this disputed topic. While he details concerns about prosecuting Mr. Trump, he does not touch on the toxic consequences of not prosecuting.

In this photo illustration, packages of Mifepristone tablets are displayed at a family planning clinic on April 13, 2023 in Rockville, Maryland. House Democrats on Thursday called on Walmart, Costco , Kroger , Safeway and Health Mart to publicly commit to sell the prescription abortion pill mifepristone at their retail pharmacies. Goldman and Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., sent a letter asking the companies' CEOs to confirm by June 23 whether their pharmacies will get certified to sell the abortion pill. Democratic governors and senators asked the companies in March whether their pharmacies will get certified to dispense the medication. The largest retail pharmacies in the U.S. have found themselves increasingly caught in the middle of the national battle over abortion access, which was set in motion by the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. What body neutrality means and how to get there
  + stars: | 2023-05-29 | by ( Madeline Holcombe | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
What is body neutrality? If body positivity is celebrating your body, body neutrality is not thinking about it much at all. “Body neutrality really takes that focus away altogether … and advocates for really focusing on other things.”While that may seem like a bit of a letdown compared with the concept of positivity, body neutrality is beneficial because the aim is not to tie self-worth to what a body looks like or even what it can do. “This concept of body neutrality really hit home,” she said. Body neutrality roadblocks and strategiesCampos likes to think of the ongoing relationship people have with their bodies as an archeological dig.
The abortion pill mifepristone is either banned or restricted to varying degrees in 27 states despite a Supreme Court decision that — for now — maintains Food and Drug Administration regulations allowing easy access to the medication. The Supreme Court, acting on an emergency basis, last week blocked lower federal court orders that had imposed severe restrictions on mifepristone even in some states where abortion remains legal. The side that loses at the appeals courts is certain to ask the Supreme Court to take the case to make a final determination on the legality of the FDA rules. Patients previously were required by FDA to obtain mifepristone in-person from a health-care provider or take the medication under their supervision. While the Supreme Court's decision at least temporarily maintains access to mifepristone in states that support broad access to abortion, it will have less or no impact in conservative states that banned the procedure since last summer, when the high court overturned the half-century-old federal constitutional right to abortion.
