Will Trump’s former defense lawyer protect the Justice Department from Trump? Justice Department attorneys now hope that Trump’s pick for the critical No. 2 position at the department — Todd Blanche, the president-elect’s defense lawyer — can help protect the department’s career civil servants from Trump. Blanche served as Trump’s lead criminal defense lawyer in the Stormy Daniels hush money case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Incoming district attorney Nathan Hochman, who is set to take office Dec. 2, has said he needs to review the case before he makes a decision.

PARIS — Most have on jeans, some wear rough work boots, and one sings with a white construction helmet tucked under his arm. The 80-strong choir has come together to do more than sing, though — the crew of architects, stonemasons, archaeologists, art historians, art conservators and others have helped rebuild Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral after a fire ripped through the iconic French Gothic masterpiece nearly five years ago. Much like the building and rebuilding of a cathedral, a small army of individuals needs to work in unison to create extraordinary music. Just weeks before, she and her husband had taken their children to visit the cathedral — and now it was at risk of being reduced to rubble and ashes, she remembers. “Everyone was very sad and very anxious about the potential collapse of the cathedral overnight,” she said.

The Onion has won the bid for Infowars’ assets

CNN —Satirical news site The Onion won the auction to acquire conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ Infowars, which was sold off as part of a defamation settlement after he falsely called the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre a hoax. The Onion’s bid was backed by the families of eight victims of school shooting and one first responder. Jones was previously ordered to pay $1.5 billion to families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims. Jones had used Infowars to spread some of the most disturbing and disgusting lies and conspiracy theories into the public discourse. Though Collins declined to detail the bid amount, he said it was the highest and that the funding came from The Onion itself.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are still method dressing
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —While some might be growing weary of celebrity method dressing — the styling phenomenon that sees actors match their red carpet garb to their latest movie role — character-based fashion shows no sign of stopping. In the run up to the release of Luca Guadagnino’s erotic tennis drama “Challengers” this spring, star Zendaya wore almost exclusively white and lime green looks — often adorned with literal tennis balls. Now, it’s Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s turn. TheStewartofNY/WireImage/Getty ImagesOne of the pair's earliest examples of method dressing took place at the Paris Olympic Games in July. Gilbert Flores/Variety/Getty ImagesPerhaps, if we’ve reached the peak of method dressing, the trend might evolve to become more subtle, playful and less restrictive.

In the latest Hollywood movie bidding war, the battle between a theatrical and a streaming release could not have been more stark. And in this case, theaters won out. The film will star Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi from “Saltburn” as the rageful Heathcliff. Ms. Robbie’s company and its partner, independent studio MRC, have instead been won over by Warner Bros., the studio said on Thursday. But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. Ric Tapia | Getty Images Sport | Getty ImagesSports team owners benefiting from soaring team values are also facing new pressure from two of the oldest certainties in American wealth: death and taxes. With the average age of team owners rising, and team values skyrocketing into the billions, owners and leagues are increasingly focused on how to ensure smooth ownership transitions to the next generation of buyers. Succession and taxes have become especially important in the National Football League, where the average age of team owners is now over 72 and team values are all surging. The average NFL team is now worth $6.49 billion, and no team is valued at less than $5.25 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations. A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. Looser language and new rulesEveryone I talked to for this story had rules for which words they would and wouldn't say.

Paris CNN —Days before taking part in the Paris Olympics, Tom Daley already felt like he had won a gold medal, such was his joy at having his kids at the competition with him. On Monday, the British diver got his hands on an actual medal, too, winning silver alongside partner Noah Williams in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform. That marked the fourth medal of Daley’s long Olympic career, dating all the way back to the Beijing Games in 2008 when he competed as a fresh-faced 14-year-old. “It’s the happiest I’ve been in diving in all these years because diving wasn’t necessarily my top priority,” he told reporters. The silver medal adds to the gold and two bronzes that Daley already owns, but the 30-year-old has many titles besides Olympic medal winner.

It was the top box office film of the year, earning $1.4 billion worldwide, and it became Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film ever, outpacing both “Dark Knight” movies, “Wonder Woman” and every chapter in the “Harry Potter” franchise. It was a DayGlo-pink rebuttal to decades of conventional Hollywood thinking, and its success seemed to herald a new paradigm for the film industry. Movies written and directed by women and focused on female protagonists could attract enormous audiences to multiplexes around the world. Yet in the 12 months since the movie’s release, little has changed in Hollywood. The box office is down 17 percent from last year at this time, and studios spooked by a fickle audience (yes to “Twisters,” no to “Fall Guy”) are again questioning the reliability of the theatrical marketplace.
