Qingdao and Lanshan are two of the top five biggest Chinese oil importing ports, according to data from Kpler. Shandong is home to numerous independent refineries known as teapots that account for up to one-fifth of China's processing capacity. Port authorities could detain ships for days to rectify any issues, prompting shippers to divert cargoes to other Chinese ports, the sources said. Almost all tankers hauling crude to Qingdao for independent refiners are more than 10 years old, said Vortexa analyst Emma Li. In April, tankers calling at Shandong ports experienced delays after customs authorities stepped up checks on diluted bitumen cargoes.

The announcement comes a week after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean. Pentagon officials later said that a second suspected Chinese surveillance balloon had been spotted over Latin America on Thursday. The saga of unidentified objects has since continued, as on Friday, the US shot down another unidentified object flying approximately 40,000 feet over Alaska, and on Saturday, another unidentified object was shot down over northern Canada.

Russia is sending an ice-breaking tanker of oil to China via the Arctic Circle, Bloomberg data shows. It could open up a quicker route to Asia, with an EU ban on seaborne Russian oil due next month. Its crude oil shipments to the region have already plunged 60% since its February invasion of Ukraine. The measure will bar EU tankers from transporting Russian oil — meaning deliveries to alternative buyers in India, for example, will take 10 times as long. Like India, China has been snapping up Russian crude sold at a discount as Moscow seeks alternative buyers to its European market.
