With the glaring exception of the presidential race, North Carolina Democrats had a good 2024 election. Those results largely comport with decades of political trends in North Carolina. For decades, voters in North Carolina have shown a propensity to elect Republicans for federal office while supporting Democrats in downballot statewide races. North Carolina, which holds its races for governor in presidential election years, has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election but one since 1980. “Welcome to the political legacy and history and trajectory of North Carolina politics.

Elon Musk's ownership has shifted X's political stance, affecting Democratic ad spending. X switched political ads back on last year as it looked to recoup lost revenue after a brand exodus. It ceased taking political advertising in 2019 under former CEO Jack Dorsey; Musk reversed that decision last year. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., talks with reporters in the U.S. Capitol after the last votes of the week on Thursday, September 12, 2024. U.S House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would preserve some of the clean energy tax credits enacted under President Joe Biden but would seek to eliminate others, as an upcoming battle over taxes next year comes into focus in Washington. Johnson declined to specify which provisions he would support keeping in place, saying he's "not putting any of that on the table yet." More than a dozen members of Johnson's own party, many of whom face difficult re-election fights, asked the speaker in a letter last month to preserve some of the tax credits and deductions in the IRA. "Prematurely repealing energy tax credits, particularly those which were used to justify investments that already broke ground, would undermine private investments and stop development that is already ongoing," the 18 lawmakers wrote in the letter.

The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled Monday to remove former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from state ballots ahead of the general election. The 4-3 ruling upholds an appeals court ruling Friday that said Kennedy’s name should be taken off the ballot. A lower court had previously denied Kennedy’s effort to be removed. “But that is a price the North Carolina Constitution expects us to incur to protect voters’ fundamental right to vote their conscience and have that vote count.”Justices Anita Earls, Richard Dietz and Allison Riggs dissented. A spokesperson for the North Carolina State Board of Elections did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the court's decision or the new timeline for ballots.

Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s name must be removed from North Carolina's November ballot, the state's Supreme Court ordered. The 4-3 decision by North Carolina's high court came hours after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Kennedy's name had to stay on that state's ballot over his objections. In all three states, Trump polls better in a two-candidate race than he does in a six-candidate race. The state Supreme Court ruling acknowledged "that expediting the process of printing new ballots will require considerable time and effort by our election officials and significant expense to the State." "But our election officials are professionals, and I have no doubt we will rise to the challenge," Bell said.

But one narrative has quickly taken hold in parts of the right-wing media ecosystem: The security failure was the result of workforce diversity initiatives and women working as Secret Service agents. Matt Walsh, a far-right media personality, wrote a series of posts on the social media platform X assailing the notion of women working as Secret Service agents. “There should not be any women in the Secret Service. “Female agents were also among those guarding Trump’s armored SUV as it prepared to depart the scene,” said Campbell. Associations that represent women in law enforcement reacted to the unfounded attacks on female agents with disappointment and alarm.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A U.S. District Court judge is standing by her decision to block portions of a public health order from New Mexico's governor that would suspend the right to carry firearms in many public parks in the Albuquerque area, with appeals pending before a higher court. The Monday order from Albuquerque-based Judge Kae Riggs denied a request from the governor to leave in place a temporary ban on firearms in some public places in greater Albuquerque, including most public parks. “Judge Riggs’ opinion ignores this caselaw and the massive amount of historical evidence in the record supporting the constitutionality of the temporary restrictions imposed by the public health order,” Hayden said in an email. The rest of the public health orders have remained intact, including directives for monthly inspections of firearm dealers statewide, reports on gunshot victims at New Mexico hospitals, wastewater testing for illicit substances at schools and more. Votes against the bill were cast by two Republican lawmakers who are pursuing impeachment proceedings against the governor for her emergency health orders on gun violence.

The battle to win the Republican Iowa caucus is the most expensive on record, with over $120 million spent on ads by the campaigns and their affiliated political action committees in the Hawkeye State, according to data provided to CNBC by AdImpact. Around $84 million of the $120 million total ad buys came from campaigns and allies of the top three candidates, Trump, Haley and Florida. DeSantis' campaign and two outside allies have spent a combined $30 million on TV, digital, and radio ads in Iowa. One of the two DeSantis super PACs, Never Back Down, has knocked on over 915,000 doors in the Iowa, according to the organization. New Offer Seeks to Revive Collapsed Trucker Yellow

Yellow was the third-largest carrier in trucking’s less-than-truckload sector, in which freight from multiple customers is combined in a single trailer. Photo: Charlie Riedel/Associated PressBankrupt trucker Yellow is considering an offer to revive the carrier and rehire thousands of its former workers as it weighs competing bids at a court-supervised auction that would disperse its nationwide network of truck terminals to rivals. Sarah Riggs Amico, executive chair of auto carrier Jack Cooper Transport, is leading a bid that would replace Yellow, which shut down over the summer, with a smaller, leaner trucking company that aims to win back some of the billions of dollars worth of freight business that has shifted to a range of other carriers.

When Yellow abruptly shuttered its operations in the summer and filed for bankruptcy protection, few thought that a buyer would emerge and try to revive the long-troubled trucking giant. The plan rests, however, on getting the Treasury Department to allow Yellow to postpone repayment of a $700 million rescue loan that it made to the company in 2020. But the Treasury may not accept the plan because there are legal obstacles to extending the loan. Some trucking analysts say reviving Yellow will be hard because many of its customers will have moved on to other trucking companies that are much better run than the old Yellow. But Sarah Riggs Amico, the trucking executive leading the deal, said only her plan could bring back thousands of jobs, adding that she had the experience to build a leaner company in partnership with the Teamsters and assemble an executive team that can win back customers.

Food banks are bracing for an onslaught amidst reduced resources and high prices. The food bank has already been up against high food and gas costs and increased demand. And it's not just the food banks themselves that will be affected but also the programs and partners the food banks work with. "A lot of people aren't really thinking in terms of that, that this is really, really going to hurt some of the most vulnerable populations." And while demand continues, there isn't as much food available as during the pandemic when food banks were given assistance.
