CNN —Julián Álvarez has signed for Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in reported deal worth approximately $104 million, the Spanish club announced on Monday. According to British media, Atleti will pay an initial $82m (£64m) for Álvarez, with a further $22m (£17m) in potential add-ons. CNN has reached out to City and Atlético to confirm the reported transfer fee. “New challenges, with the same people as always,” Álvarez posted on Instagram after sealing his move to the Spanish capital. CNN —Disgraced former Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales was detained and released after questioning upon arriving in Madrid from an international flight, according to Spain’s Civil Guard. A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Rubiales was detained this morning after landing at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic. He was detained by the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit (UCO) on the runway before being driven away in a van. The UCO is a body of the Spanish Civil Guard which investigates and fights serious and organized crime in Spain. CNN —Spain’s LaLiga says it is “studying and analyzing the facts” around the latest alleged racist abuse incident towards Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr. at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium on Saturday. He was also the target of racist abuse in Real’s league game at Valencia last season. In late May 2023, Spanish police said seven people had been detained in relation to incidents of racist abuse directed at Vinícius. These actions were the focal point of much of the abuse Federico received on his Instagram.

CNN —Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton said that he’s fulfilling a “childhood dream” by joining Ferrari in 2025 in his first social media post since his sensational move away from Mercedes was announced on Thursday. “It’s been a crazy few days which have been filled with a whole range of emotions. But as you all now know, after an incredible 11 years at Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, the time has come for me to start a new chapter in my life and I will be joining Scuderia Ferrari in 2025,” Hamilton said on his social media channels on Saturday. “I feel incredibly fortunate, after achieving things with Mercedes that I could only have dreamed of as a kid, that I now have the chance to fulfil another childhood dream.
