For everyday consumers, the simplest way to send encrypted messages or make encrypted calls is to use communications apps like Signal or WhatsApp that have implemented end-to-end encryption between other Signal and WhatsApp users. Both apps also allow users to make encrypted phone calls with other users through the internet. If iMessage users text other iMessage users or Google Messages users text other Google Messages users, those chats are automatically encrypted with the Signal protocol. For phone calls, Google and Apple offer encryption if the calls are made through their internet-connected calling apps — Google Fi and FaceTime. A Google exec took a thinly veiled jab at Apple at the company's Google IO conference. The exec said the company hopes every mobile operating system adopts a messaging standard called RCS. Google has campaigned for Apple to adopt RCS to make texting between iOS and Android a better experience. The moment was Google's latest attempt to pressure Apple to adopt something called the the RCS messaging standard, or Rich Communications Services. Samat said that over 800 million people currently use the RCS standard, with expectations that number will balloon to 1 billion by the end of the year.

In a "happy birthday" post to SMS, Google called Apple out, saying it's time to switch to RCS. "But after 30 years of SMS texting, it's truly time." Unlike SMS, RCS supports more multimedia features and makes it easier to send GIFs and hi-resolution videos through texts. Texting between devices using RCS is a similar experience to iPhone users texting with Apple's proprietary iMessage system, according to The Verge. "Hopefully Apple can #GetTheMessage so we don't have to keep waiting to remove the whole 'green-versus-blue bubble' thing," Budhiraja wrote.

Text messages sent with RCS would work like iMessages between iPhone users, according to The Verge. For example, like in iMessage, Google Messages users will be able to watch YouTube videos in the app, and can make a calendar event if a date or time is sent in a message. Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he doesn't get a lot of feedback from iPhone users that Apple needs to fix messaging between iPhones and Androids. Apple CEO Tim Cook told an audience member Wednesday to "buy your mom an iPhone." The fan asked Cook about how Apple converts Android messages, a long contentious topic. At the annual Code Conference Wednesday night, Cook was answering audience questions when one man asked about improving cross-device messaging. This is why some users complain about poorly converted videos and other media when sending them between Android and iPhones. "These problems exist because Apple refuses to adopt modern texting standards when people with iPhones and Android phones text each other," the Android website says.
