In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

CNN —There’ll be a strong sense of déjà vu when French President Emmanuel Macron lays the flattery on thick for Donald Trump in Paris this weekend. The president seeks to highlight US commitment to sub-Saharan Africa in the face of China’s investment-led regional power play. As June’s Pride Month festivities were nearing a conclusion, Tractor Supply released a statement that put LGBTQ+ rights proponents on alert. With that move, Tractor Supply became the first domino to fall as companies began pulling out of the Corporate Equality Index. For Tractor Supply and some others, it marked a staunch turn in policy. For former Tractor Supply customer Ashe Taylor-Austin, the retailer’s announcement pushed them to look elsewhere when purchasing supplies for their horse. “When we got the news about Tractor Supply, I immediately started shopping around,” said Taylor-Austin, who switched to buying from a small business.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made self-sufficiency a major pillar of his economic strategy to make China a tech superpower. On Monday, the US Commerce Ministry announced curbs on the sale of two dozen types of semiconductor-making equipment and restrictions on numerous Chinese companies from accessing American technology. China’s Commerce Ministry condemned the move, accusing the US of “abuse” of export controls and posing “a significant threat” to the stability of global industrial and supply chains. ‘Strongest ever’ controlsSenior US officials have also accused China of outright stealing American-made AI software, which Beijing denies. Last October, the Commerce Ministry reduced the types of semiconductors that American companies can sell to China, citing the desire to close loopholes in regulations announced in 2022.

New York CNN —Cargill, the megasized Minnesota-based food production giant, is laying off about 5% of its global workforce as food commodity prices drop. Cargill is America’s largest privately held company, according to Forbes, and is also the world’s largest agricultural commodities trader. In a statement to CNN on Monday, the company said the changes are part of “a long-term strategy” set earlier this year. In simpler terms, the company is the middleman distributing grains, meat and other farm products around the world. It had profited heavily during the pandemic and its aftermath, thanks to inflation and geopolitical turmoil throwing food prices into disarray.

Both beta amyloid plaques and tau tangles are early signs of the brain’s march toward a possible Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. “Most of a person’s body mass index (BMI) reflects subcutaneous fat, not visceral fat,” Raji said. “The more visceral fat one has, the more inflammation happens in the body and it’s much worse, in truth, than the inflammation that occurs with subcutaneous fat,” Raji said. Visceral fat receives more blood flow due to its placement near organs and is more hormonally active than subcutaneous fat, Raji said. “Previously, we had only showed a link between visceral fat and amyloid.”The PET scans showed that as visceral fat levels went up, so did levels of both amyloid and tau, according to the new research.

Many Americans already have whiplash after recent swings in mortgage rates: After the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate peaked at nearly 8% last fall, rates fell steadily ahead of the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut in September. That trend has since reversed, and mortgage rates have climbed back up to nearly 7% as investors bet that the Fed will cut rates fewer times than initially expected due to recent strong economic data. This helps enable a reliable flow of money to mortgage lenders, allowing them to offer more affordable rates to would-be homebuyers. During the housing meltdown of 2008, the two companies were brought under government control in an effort to stabilize the housing market. Some analysts advocate for full privatization, meaning the government would not provide assurances to backstop the two mortgage companies.

“In the law, there is a clear separation of church and state,” Childs, an attorney who represents the Houston area on the board, said of her decision. This year, Oklahoma’s top education official began ordering public schools with students in grades five through 12 to incorporate the Bible into lesson plans. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, a Republican, has purchased 500 Bibles and asked for $3 million from the state to buy copies for every classroom. “Public school is not Sunday school,” Wright said. Childs, the Texas State Board of Education member, sees the current push for increased religious influence in public schools as concerning, as it comes amid a dialing back of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at companies and institutions.

Legal analysts had said it was possible that the president’s son could receive a year or less behind bars or even probation. President Biden will begin a long-promised trip to Africa on Sunday night when he travels to Angola for a visit aimed at acknowledging the long and painful history between the two nations while committing to a future of economic investment. Mr. Biden’s trip to Africa is the first by an American president since Barack Obama traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia in 2015. The visit, likely Mr. Biden’s last overseas trip during his time in office, comes after he pledged in 2022 to visit the continent to make clear that the United States was “all in on Africa’s future.” After multiple delays, Mr. Biden is conducting a three-day diplomatic tour of Angola, where he will visit a slavery museum and spotlight a rail corridor that his aides point to as a primary example of his administration’s economic strategy in the region. The $1 billion project, known as the Lobito Corridor, would link Angola with Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, nations rich with the critical minerals used to make batteries for smartphones and electric vehicles. By highlighting the project, Mr. Biden is trying to cement efforts to expand American access to the critical resources in Africa and, in effect, compete with China’s growing influence on the continent.

Strangio, an attorney for the ACLU, is set to make history Wednesday as the first known transgender person to argue before the US Supreme Court. With hindsight, Strangio’s career can appear like it’s been hurtling toward this week’s Supreme Court appearance. Esseks often gets asked, he said, whether the ACLU tapped Strangio to present its case before the Supreme Court because he’s trans. The Supreme Court ruling also could be life-altering for physicians like Dr. Izzy Lowell, whose telehealth practice, QueerMed, provides hormone therapy and other services for transgender and nonbinary people. “I think about all of the arguments that have that have been held in the Supreme Court over just the basic dignity of people.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in a recent speech in Dallas that it is still too early to consider how Trump’s tariff plans would affect the US economy. Trump’s tariffs would almost certainly push up prices for imported goods like avocados, cars and tequila. Retaliatory tariffs and consumer perceptionsFed officials will eventually develop economic models of how the US economy could perform under different tariff scenarios. Two potential developments they’ll consider will be whether retaliatory tariffs emerge from Trump’s plans, if enacted, and if Americans believe inflation will pick up. Despite the better outlook on price increases, “consumers overwhelmingly selected higher prices as their top concern and lower prices as their top wish for the new year,” the Conference Board added.

CNN —In a single post, the president-elect told the world what the end of the Ukraine war might look like. Kellogg, Trump’s 80-year-old former national security advisor, has laid out his peace plan in some detail, writing for the America First policy institute in April. Kellogg says more weapons should have been given before the Russian invasion, and immediately afterwards, to enable Ukraine to win. But that’s when the plan – which CNN has reported that Trump’s soon-to-be national security adviser is considering - stops being to Ukraine’s liking. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump is having dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Friday evening at Mar-a-Lago, a source familiar with the meeting told CNN. Some members of Trudeau’s cabinet are expected to join the dinner, a senior Canadian government official told CNN. Trudeau is expected to leave Mar-a-Lago shortly after the dinner. CNN previously reported that after the president-elect’s announcement, Trump and Trudeau had a brief call that was focused on border security and trade. Trump used tariffs against Canada during negotiations over replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The tariffs would be a significant escalation of Trump’s previous proposal, which was already a major increase on more targeted tariffs enacted during Trump’s first administration and kept in place by President Joe Biden. Canada is similarly considering its own options, including possible tariffs on U.S. goods, according to The Associated Press. America’s biggest import from Canada is oil — and any increase in energy prices would likely be felt throughout the economy. And in her statement reacting to Trump’s posts, Mexico’s Sheinbaum stated caravans of migrants were no longer reaching the border. And now he’s talking about tariffs to punish Mexico and Canada for not enforcing drugs and migrants across the border.
