AdvertisementX has added Twitch as a defendant in a suit accusing advertisers of colluding to withhold ad spend. Ad revenue on X has plummeted since Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022. Elon Musk's X is suing Twitch, alleging that the Amazon-owned video streaming platform and other companies illegally conspired to boycott advertising on the platform formerly known as Twitter. Twitch, X, and the WFA didn't immediately respond to requests for comment made by Business Insider outside normal US business hours. Musk's own behavior on and off the platform — including famously telling advertisers who boycotted X to "go fuck yourself" — hasn't encouraged advertisers to place their budgets there, either.

As Elon Musk continues to aggressively share conspiracy theories and misinformation about elections on X, election officials are fighting back. In three instances in the last month, Musk's posts highlighting election misinformation have been viewed over 200 times more than fact-checking posts correcting those claims that have been published on X by government officials or accounts. False claims he has posted this month routinely receive tens of millions of views, by X’s metrics, while rebuttals from election officials usually receive only tens or hundreds of thousands. “He is at least implicitly telling people: don’t trust the people that are running elections, trust me, trust x.com, trust Donald Trump. “You’re constantly building up a kind of armor against rationality, against fact-finding, and against the idea that election officials and responsible media can even be credible,” he said.

The judge overseeing X's lawsuit against advertisers has recused himself following a news report that showed he owned shares of Tesla . In a recusal notice dated Aug. 13, U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor in Texas backed out of X's case against the World Federation of Advertisers, which was filed last week. X, formerly known as Twitter, is owned by Elon Musk, who is also the CEO and largest shareholder in Tesla. On Monday, NPR reported that O'Connor had owned shares of Tesla in 2022, the date of his last available disclosure, posing a potential conflict of interest. Then, in an X post, Musk encouraged companies that have been "systematically boycotted by advertisers" to sue, claiming there could be "criminal liability via the RICO Act." AdvertisementJeffrey Grell, an attorney specializing in RICO, told Business Insider that RICO only deals with unlawful acts and that isn't the case here. "I think that Musk is trying to get some PR mileage out of RICO without actually filing a RICO claim here," Grell said. "If his lawyers thought that he had a civil RICO claim, they more than likely would've brought it in the claim that they filed." Similarly, Grell said advertisers could see competitors pull advertising from Musk's X and think, "'I'm going to get off Twitter.

New York CNN —A major ad industry group is shutting down, days after Elon Musk-owned X filed a lawsuit that claimed the group illegally conspired to boycott advertising on his platform. The end of GARM marks a temporary victory for Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, even though a judge hasn’t made a ruling yet. “Everyone can see that advertising on X is a treacherous business relationship for advertisers,” they said. Following that, brands’ faced issues where their ads were placed next to illegal or harmful content, the group said in a statement. GARM said its group reduced such ads from 6.1% in 2020 to 1.7% in 2023.

Read previewOn Tuesday, Elon Musk's X fulfilled his promise to sue advertisers over their boycotting of the platform. GARM creates frameworks to provide common definitions around areas like hate speech and misinformation; it's voluntary whether advertisers use them. It doesn't rank platforms on these issues, and its role isn't to advise advertisers on where to spend their dollars. US advertisers are also protected by the First Amendment to spend or not spend on whichever media platforms they please. If the X suit moves into the discovery phase, there could be a whole lot more.

X filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, a coalition of major advertisers, claiming that it had violated antitrust laws by coordinating with brands to dissuade them from spending money on the social media platform. “The illegal behavior of these organizations and their executives cost X billions of dollars,” wrote Linda Yaccarino, X’s chief executive, in an open letter to advertisers. “People are hurt when the marketplace of ideas is undermined and some viewpoints are not funded over others as part of an illegal boycott.”With the lawsuit, X effectively declared war on advertisers, which provide the bulk of the social media company’s revenue. Since Mr. Musk acquired the company and promised to usher in a new era of unfettered free speech, many advertisers have limited their spending on X, concerned by reports of rising hate speech and misinformation there. By pursuing legal action against GARM, Mr. Musk continued to break with the leaders of other social media companies, who have forged close relationships with advertisers and been responsive to their concerns about offensive online content.

New York CNN —Elon Musk’s X has accused a group of major advertisers of antitrust violations in a new lawsuit claiming the group conspired to “boycott” advertising on the platform. The lawsuit claims an influential ad industry group organized “to collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising from Twitter” because the group was concerned that the platform had deviated from brand safety standards after Musk’s acquisition in late 2022. The lawsuit is the latest effort by X to revive its core ad business, which has tanked since Musk’s takeover. It’s not the first time X has filed a lawsuit related to its declining ad business. The suit accuses Media Matters of distorting how likely it is for ads to appear beside extremist content on X.

Elon Musk's social media platform X has sued a group of advertisers, alleging that a "massive advertiser boycott" deprived the company of billions of dollars in revenue and violated antitrust laws. The company formerly known as Twitter filed the lawsuit Tuesday in a federal court in Texas against the World Federation of Advertisers and member companies Unilever, Mars, CVS Health and Orsted. Musk posted about the lawsuit on X on Tuesday, saying "now it is war" after two years of being nice and "getting nothing but empty words." X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a video announcement that the lawsuit stemmed in part from evidence uncovered by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee which she said showed a "group of companies organized a systematic illegal boycott" against X. The Republican-led committee had a hearing last month looking at whether current laws are "sufficient to deter anticompetitive collusion in online advertising."

New York CNN —Social media companies are soaking up the billions in advertising dollars that once flowed to legacy media companies — a trend that continues to accelerate despite an ever-growing mountain of evidence indicating the Silicon Valley titans govern their ballooning kingdoms with little regard for how their products negatively impact society. Time and time again, companies like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and others have been caught allowing harmful content to exist on their platforms. The committee heard testimony from the heads of the largest tech firms on the dangers of child sexual exploitation on social media. To be fair, brands would likely prefer to advertise on the platforms of responsible media actors versus the risky world of social media. But Big Tech offers these brands much more effective targeting, while boasting a larger and younger audience than legacy news organizations.

Startup Barometer wants to help advertisers identify brand-safety issues in podcast shows. Barometer is looking to potentially also launch brand safety tools for user-generated video and Substack. But if advertisers are to invest, they'll need tools that show their ads appeared next to brand-safe content. The company plans to raise another round of funding, which it will use to expand internationally and review non-English languages. Here are select slides that helped Barometer raise its seed round.
And as much as we wish we could, we can't completely shield our kids from screens. While researching for my parenting book, I found that the most successful parents don't spend time worrying about how much time their kids spend on digital devices. Instead, they teach these three skills to help their kids become "screen smart":1. How to draw screen boundariesIf you feel you have too little control over your kids' screen use, or you want to establish some rules and expectations, consider sitting down for a family meeting to create a digital road map. Allow your kids to include their input and share how your technology use will fit into the roadmap, too.
“I think advertisers are bracing to leave,” said Claire Atkin, co-founder of the adtech watchdog Check My Ads. Most marketers bristle at the thought of having their ads run alongside toxic content such as hate speech, pornography or misinformation. Also on Monday, Angelo Carusone, CEO of media watchdog Media Matters for America, tweeted calling on major Twitter advertisers “to be putting pressure on Twitter right now” to better address the increase in hate and other toxic content. “I think advertisers are going to look at this and say, is the weak Twitter advertising product becoming a better or worse investment?
