A humpback whale has stunned scientists with a journey that spanned three oceans and more than 8,000 miles, setting the record for the longest known migration between breeding grounds. “Changing climatic and ocean conditions could be driving these migrations to new breeding grounds. Some whale migration routes are known to exceed 5,000 miles between feeding and breeding grounds, and humpback whales in particular have some of the longest migrations of any mammal. The research provided “photographic evidence that confirmed humpback whales switch between breeding grounds,” he said in a telephone interview Wednesday. The organization claims that a humpback whale’s tail is so unique that there is a “97% to 99%” success rate for matching photos submitted for the species.

A new study offers more evidence linking cancer to inflammation from diets high in processed foods. Ultra-processed foods may be fueling a rise in colon cancer cases — but healthy foods could unlock new ways to prevent or treat the disease, new research suggests. The research team found that tumor samples contained a high proportion of these inflammation-causing compounds compared to healthy tissue. AdvertisementPrevious evidence has linked increased inflammation to diets high in processed food like chips, sausages, packaged desserts, and refined carbs. It uses genetic data … to see if having certain genes linked to depression also makes people more likely to have menstrual pain. The findings help expand the important, and often overlooked, discussion around mental health and period pain. Below, experts elaborate on newfound and known associations between period pain and depression, why a genetic cause can’t be inferred from a genetic connection, and ways you can manage depressive symptoms and painful periods. On the other hand, experts noted that the opposite relationship — period pain or reproductive shifts preceding depression — has occurred in both human and animal research and in clinical practice. Additionally, methods experts know to be effective in treating period pain can also improve depression, Amies Oelschlager said — such as exercise, yoga, stress-reduction techniques, dietary changes and good sleep quality and quantity.

The Summary Ancient footprints discovered in Kenya belong to two different species of human relatives who walked on the same ground at the same time, a study found. The prints are thought to belong to the species Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei. A newly discovered set of footprints in Kenya provides the first evidence that two different species of ancient human relatives walked the same ground simultaneously 1.5 million years ago. While both are human relatives, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei featured very different traits, and their fates within the human evolutionary tree took starkly different routes. Broadly speaking, Harcourt-Smith added, it has become increasingly clear that various ancient human species interacted across different habitats over the past 7 million years of evolution.

CNN —More than 1.5 million years ago, two different species of ancient human crossed paths on a lakeshore, perhaps locking eyes with each other. The researchers found 12 hominin tracks in a line, suggesting they were made by the same individual. “There’s one long trackway with 12 (hominin) footprints in it. We hypothesize that those more humanlike footprints are more likely Homo erectus just because the rest of their anatomy is so human,” Hatala said. Shown here is a fossil footprint hypothesized to have been created by Homo erectus, a species of ancient human.

More remote workers were superstar codersMusk now aims to apply that same ruthless efficiency to the federal government. Demand for AI agents is giving birth to a new class of startups and VCs hungry to invest in them. It was a topic of conversation at the Evident AI Symposium in New York on Thursday. To take AI agents a step further, technologists and startup investors are fueling a shift to so-called multi-agent systems that coordinate several AI agents to complete more complex tasks more autonomously. Well, that's still being worked out, according to a number of tech executives at the Evident AI Symposium Thursday. Heitsenrether, speaking at the Evident AI conference, told the audience that, over time, she expects AI to be seamlessly embedded in an employee's workflow.

DON'T MISS: The ultimate guide to negotiating a higher salary If you want to have a smooth transition into a satisfying retirement life, there are many questions you can ask yourself — chief among them, "Do I have enough money saved?" Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

On average, over the 20 weeks The Breakthrough survey was fielded this year, roughly 76% of US adults said weekly they’d heard at least some news about Trump. In the 15 full weeks of data following Harris’ entry into the race, a slightly smaller share – about 71% on average – said they’d heard something about her. Sentiments expressed by political independents when talking about the news surrounding Trump were negative throughout the campaign. Their sentiment when discussing what they’d heard about Harris, which was close to neutral at the start of her candidacy, declined modestly throughout the fall, undercutting her advantage over Trump on that metric.

Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.

The striking 3D reconstruction of Zosia, as locals nicknamed her, sheds light on the human found in the grisly grave. Archaeologist Dariusz Poliński, who led the team that unearthed Zosia’s remains, said it was a “mind-blowing” moment when he saw the reconstruction by Swedish forensic artist Oscar Nilsson for the first time. During the course of the 17th century, Poland and Sweden fought a series of wars, so Zosia could have been an outsider within her community. “Maybe because of some misfortune or the death of somebody else, they decided to open the grave,” Poliński suggested. A year after discovering Zosia’s grave, the same team found a child’s remains buried in an unusual way.

Among participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm, 35.5% developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome compared with 6.7% of people without those problems, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology. “Establishing the relationship between sleep dysfunction and MCR risk is important because early intervention may offer the best hope for preventing dementia,” the authors said. Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome. But when the authors considered the seven sleep components separately, only daytime dysfunction was associated with 3.3 times higher risk of MCR. Spires-Jones pointed out that for the potential link between daytime dysfunction and MCR, reverse causation is also possible.

The researchers found that reducing sugar consumption in this window decreased the type 2 diabetes risk by about 35% and the risk of high blood pressure by roughly 20%. The research team looked at data from before and after the end of the United Kingdom’s World War II-era sugar rationing in September 1953. When the rationing of sugar and sweets ended in September 1953, the average adult’s daily sugar consumption in the UK nearly doubled almost immediately, from about 40 grams to 80 grams. Corkins says one way for parents to reduce sugar consumption in young children is to change their own habits. The key is practicing moderation when consuming sugary foods.

The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982.
