With nearly all the ballots now counted in the 2024 election, we can fully evaluate the performance of the national and battleground polls this cycle. The battleground polls also weren’t far off the mark, either, although their misses were slightly larger than what we saw in the national polling. What else the polls got rightBeyond signaling that the 2024 presidential election was competitive and uncertain, the polls nailed the political atmospherics that shaped the contest. Additionally, the polls foretold many of the key demographic trends that ended up defining the 2024 election, including Trump’s gains with Latino voters. That was a major story in the 2024 election: There were more self-identified Republican voters than Democratic voters.

Doylestown, Pennsylvania CNN —Scott Presler has built a persona as a tall, very friendly, and gay face of the MAGA movement. His profile on X lists his location as “Make Kindness Cool Again.” Last week he smiled for every photo and shook hands with every fan who followed him to a county commissioners’ meeting in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The meeting itself was less chipper, with Presler’s acolytes repeatedly shouting “TRAITOR!” at a Democratic official, but Presler himself stayed upbeat. “For the first time in modern history, there are more registered Republicans than Democrats here in this county,” Presler said as he addressed the commissioners. On Kelly’s show, Presler called himself “a data guy,” and got into the weeds on voter registration numbers.

New York CNN —Top pollster J. Ann Selzer will retire from the Des Moines Register’s famed Iowa Poll and the survey will “evolve” after it failed to accurately capture former President Donald Trump’s strong support in the 2024 election, resulting in a 16-point miss. Trump ultimately swept to victory over Harris in the state by a 13-point margin, winning the actual vote 56-43%. Prior to the 2024 survey, the Iowa Poll under her stewardship had been considered by many to be the methodological gold standard. As of June 2024, election forecaster Nate Silver gave Selzer an A+ rating. In an op-ed for the Register, Selzer said that her decision to part ways with the poll predated the erroneous results.

Luzerne County is one of many counties in Pennsylvania — and across the country — that shifted to the right this year. Kevin Kraynak, a Luzerne County native, traveled from his home in California to try to get out the vote. Luzerne County became a hotbed of election denialism in 2020, and Pennsylvania is an open-carry state. Just over 152,000 total ballots were cast in Luzerne County — about the same as in 2020. In only one other Pennsylvania county were Trump’s gains greater.

Republican Tim Sheehy has defeated Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Montana, NBC News projects, deepening the GOP’s projected Senate majority after the party's wins in West Virginia and Ohio. Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, defeated the three-term senator by consolidating Republican voters in a state that has turned a deeper shade of red in recent years. Sheehy and his allies cast Tester as a liberal Democrat who votes with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, undercutting the incumbent’s reputation as a centrist. But Democrats were cautiously optimistic that Montana voters would look at the presidential race and the Senate race through different lenses. While Sheehy had said he would respect Montana voters’ decision on the issue, he appeared open to supporting federal action on abortion, which Democrats exploited on the campaign trail and on the airwaves.

Nebraska is one of two states that allocates its electoral votes by congressional district. And although Republicans are well positioned to win the majority, Democrats cannot be counted out entirely. The early votes of new voters — voters who did not show up in 2020 — are of particular interest because they are votes that could change what happens in 2024 relative to the last presidential election.
