☆ Despite presidential headwinds, these Senate Democratic candidates won states Harris lost

CNN —Republicans flipped the Senate, but Democratic candidates often outran the top of the ticket, winning at least four battleground states that Vice President Kamala Harris lost. Harris lost all seven swing states to President-elect Donald Trump, while her party’s Senate candidates narrowly held Wisconsin, Nevada and open seats in Michigan and Arizona. In some races, the differences between the Senate candidates’ and Harris’ performances were more pronounced among subsections of the Democratic coalition. While Trump won independents by 2 points, Rosen won the group by 6. Overall, Democratic Senate candidates received more votes than Harris in about half of this year’s races, including in less competitive states such as Minnesota, Virginia and Missouri.

But given Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, House Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances of preserving their slim majority. The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democratic Sen. CNN —Sen. Tammy Baldwin will win reelection in Wisconsin, CNN projects, in a victory for Senate Democrats trying to defend the so-called blue wall states despite losing them at the presidential level and having already lost their majority in the chamber. Baldwin will be returning for a third term to a dramatically shifted Senate. CNN has not yet projected the other “blue wall” Senate races – in Pennsylvania and Michigan – as of Wednesday afternoon. She also scored the endorsement of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a notable get for a Democrat running statewide. Republicans also attacked her over transgender issues, trying to paint the senator as too liberal for the state.

CNN —Republicans will win the US Senate majority, CNN projects, shifting the balance of power in Washington. Should Harris prevail, she would face problems in confirming members of her Cabinet and judicial nominees, and the GOP Senate could thwart her domestic plans. Jim Justice was projected to pick up the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin. And in Nebraska, CNN projects that Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will defeat a stronger-than-expected challenge from independent Dan Osborn, who, along with his allies, outspent Republican forces in the state. In Michigan, Harris holds a lead over Trump by 48% to 43% among likely voters. Among those likely voters who say they’re extremely motivated to vote in Michigan, 51% support Harris to 45% for Trump. In Wisconsin, they break 52% Harris to 47% Trump, and in Pennsylvania, they divide 50% for Harris to 47% for Trump. Harris holds a wider lead among Black voters in Michigan (83% Harris to 12% Trump) than she does in Pennsylvania (76% Harris to 21% Trump). Likely voters include all registered voters in the poll weighted for their predicted likelihood of voting in this year’s election.

Tammy Baldwin and Republican Eric Hovde sparred over abortion rights and economic issues Friday night during their first and only debate of a hotly contested Wisconsin Senate race that has tightened just weeks before Election Day. “Look, it’s been brought back to our state,” Hovde said during the exchange. It’s very clear that he has never read Roe v. Baldwin won her 2012 Senate race by more than 5 percentage points and her 2018 re-election contest by nearly 11 percentage points, demonstrating her appeal in rural areas.
