By Lisandra ParaguassuBRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil plans to expand its railway network with a 40 billion reais ($8 billion) fund that will be financed by removing discounts given to rail companies by previous government contracts, Transport Minister Renan Filho told Reuters. The Federal Audit Court is now reviewing those extensions after the government of President Lula da Silva disputed the discounts. "We think that some procedures adopted in the contracts are unacceptable," Filho said in an interview on Friday. According to the government, the companies owe an additional 40 billion reais ($8.1 billion) in unpaid concession payments. The government's goal is to have 40% of Brazil's freight, which is mostly iron ore, transported by rail, up from 17% today.

An image comparing old and new photos of armed women sitting in a jeep has been falsely claimed to show Bangladeshi “freedom fighters” from the country’s 1971 Liberation Movement. Reuters traced the image back to a July 2013 Facebook post crediting Renan Ahmed (here). He said the original black-and-white photo of the women was captured in 1961 – a decade before the civil war. Renan said in Facebook replies that the later image, which is a recreation with the same women, was captured in 2017 (here). The photo was taken a decade before the 1971 civil war in Bangladesh and was captured for fun after a hunting trip.
SAO PAULO, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Brazilian banks may start setting aside provisions for losses with retailer Americanas already in the fourth quarter of 2022, analysts say. Banks such as BTG Pactual , Bradesco (BBDC4.SA), Santander Brasil , Itaú Unibanco Holding (ITUB4.SA) and Banco do Brasil (BBAS3.SA) have around 15 billion reais in loans with Americanas, according to analyst reports. Analysts estimate the banks may provision around 30% of their loans in the fourth quarter, which would be equivalent to 4.5 billion reais ($890 million), even with bankruptcy protection taking place in January, as a precautionary measure allowed by the Brazilian central bank. The first Brazilian bank to release fourth quarter earnings, on Thursday, is Banco Santander Brasil.
