CNN —An Italian appeals court on Wednesday upheld the convictions of two Americans accused of killing an Italian police officer in 2019, according to a joint statement from the lawyers representing them in Italy. Elder and Natale-Hjorth were arrested in 2019 while on vacation in Rome for the murder of the Italian police officer Mario Cerciello Rega, who was stabbed 11 times with a knife in a botched drug deal, police said at the time. In 2022, Reuters reported that the appeals court had lowered Elder’s sentence to 24 years, and Natale-Hjorth’s sentence to 22 years. The 29-year-old was kayaking with a group close to the Swiss-Italian border when he “became trapped in a recirculating feature and did not resurface,” Pyranha, the manufacturer of Orton’s kayaks, said in a statement. “Authorities and friends are tirelessly continuing their search efforts, and at this time, Bren is considered missing,” the statement added. ROME, March 16 (Reuters) - Italy's highest court late on Wednesday ordered two American tourists to stand a new trial for the 2019 killing of a policeman in central Rome following a botched attempt to buy drugs, but upheld a murder sentence for one of them. The Rome-based Court of Cassation said Elder was guilty of murder, but ordered a new trial because some related allegations were not sufficiently corroborated. The court said Natale-Hjorth should stand trial again because there was not enough evidence of his complicity in the killing. He did not handle the murder weapon during the attack but was tussling with the second police officer, Andrea Varriale.
