“I cried for my area, my house, and everything around me,” Al-Hasanat told CNN in June. Several Palestinians told CNN they could take only their most significant personal items on long and hazardous journeys of displacement. CNN —Shaima Refaat Alareer, the daughter of a prominent Palestinian poet, was killed alongside her family in an Israeli airstrike on a house west of Gaza City on Friday, according to multiple sources, four months after her father died in a similar attack. Eyewitnesses in Al-Rimal neighborhood told CNN that three Israeli missiles struck a home where the family were sheltering. Shaima was the daughter of Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer, who was killed along with several other family members when an Israeli airstrike hit their home in the Shujayya neighborhood in December. Video shot for CNN shows residents running towards the house after the strike and gathering around the bodies of those killed. Residents told CNN the family’s remains were taken to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital.

At New York University, the spring semester began with a poetry reading. Students and faculty gathered in the atrium of Bobst Library. At that time, about twenty six thousand Palestinians had already been killed in Israel’s horrific war on Gaza; the reading was a collective act of bearing witness. Afterward, we learned that students and faculty members were called into disciplinary meetings for participating in this apparently “disruptive” act; written warnings were issued. Over the past six months, since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, we have seen the university administration fail to adequately protect dissent on campus, actively squelching it instead.

“In this situation, we’re afraid that she goes into labor, and we wouldn’t know where to go,” he told CNN. Shelling in Nuseirat is intense, but not as bad as it was in Gaza City, where neighborhoods were “entirely wiped out,” he said. Some of those bodies are on a flatbed trailer that appears to have been used to carry people away from Gaza City. Refaat Alareer, 44, a literature professor in Gaza City, said Thursday – before Israel told Gazans to evacuate – the shelves in his local supermarket are emptying every day. “The gates are closed, and no one is being let through,” he told CNN.

A Palestinian man says his youngest kids used to cry and scream when they heard bombings nearby. Since Hamas first attacked Israel, Israel has devastated the Gaza Strip with air strikes. The youngest children have not been allowed to go outside, Alareer said, adding, "Not that it is safer inside." "It's usually, in Gaza, 'yeah, he was born after the war, after the second war, after that war, after this war,'" Alareer said. "Here, there is not anything, not enough food, not enough water," Ahmed Abu Artema, another Palestinian living in Gaza, told Insider.
