In the exit polls, about 1 in 8 voters who described Trump as “too extreme” still voted for him. Likewise, in the VoteCast survey, Trump won 1 in 6 voters who expressed concern that he would steer the country in an authoritarian direction. Trump won almost exactly the same share of voters who said in the VoteCast survey that he lacks the moral character to serve as president. Even among the voter groups most directly affected by these policies, Trump won substantial support from people who disagreed with him. In either case, the result was that Trump won far too many voters who supported legal abortion for Harris to prevail.

David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 shooting at his high school in Parkland, Florida, who turned into a national anti-violence activist, has launched a bid to serve in leadership of the Democratic National Committee. Hogg went on to found Leaders We Deserve, a group that focuses on electing young people to local and national public office. Hogg's announcement is the latest in recent activity around new DNC leadership, since current DNC Chair Jaime Harrison announced he was stepping down. So to say Michigan Democrats were shocked by the mayor's decision to go independent is a bit of understatement. In my experience, most independent candidates who previously ran and won as Democrats or Republicans but then switch do so out of some political necessity. For the less politically engaged, a category that includes many key swing voters, this is a very appealing elevator pitch. But not every state party will be as desperate as Kansas Democrats were in accepting a party-switcher as its party savior. Ultimately, the national environment has never looked more enticing for independent candidates to disrupt the two-party duopoly.
