In the exit polls, about 1 in 8 voters who described Trump as “too extreme” still voted for him. Likewise, in the VoteCast survey, Trump won 1 in 6 voters who expressed concern that he would steer the country in an authoritarian direction. Trump won almost exactly the same share of voters who said in the VoteCast survey that he lacks the moral character to serve as president. Even among the voter groups most directly affected by these policies, Trump won substantial support from people who disagreed with him. In either case, the result was that Trump won far too many voters who supported legal abortion for Harris to prevail.

David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 shooting at his high school in Parkland, Florida, who turned into a national anti-violence activist, has launched a bid to serve in leadership of the Democratic National Committee. Hogg went on to found Leaders We Deserve, a group that focuses on electing young people to local and national public office. Hogg's announcement is the latest in recent activity around new DNC leadership, since current DNC Chair Jaime Harrison announced he was stepping down. Candidates for DNC chair are to hold forums in January before the committtee's membership votes on Feb. 1. So far, announced DNC chair candidates include Minnesota party chair and DNC vice chair Ken Martin, Wisconsin party Chair Ben Wikler, former Maryland Gov.

So to say Michigan Democrats were shocked by the mayor's decision to go independent is a bit of understatement. In my experience, most independent candidates who previously ran and won as Democrats or Republicans but then switch do so out of some political necessity. For the less politically engaged, a category that includes many key swing voters, this is a very appealing elevator pitch. But not every state party will be as desperate as Kansas Democrats were in accepting a party-switcher as its party savior. Ultimately, the national environment has never looked more enticing for independent candidates to disrupt the two-party duopoly.

Andy Beshear warned Democrats about a key obstacle to their ambitions for redefinition: President-elect Donald Trump. Merriam-Webster’s word of the year is one that the dictionary suggests unifies both sides of the aisle. The word was frequently used by the media this year, Merriam-Webster noted, and was repeated on networks like MSNBC and Fox News — particularly when describing politics and the presidential election. Several other terms associated with politics — including “democracy” — also made the dictionary’s words of the year list. But this year, Merriam-Webster said the word saw a “rise in lookups” due to “multiple reasons relating to the U.S. election,” including the health of both President Joe Biden and Trump. Meanwhile, Collins Dictionary named “Brat” word of the year, after the Charli XCX album became part of the cultural zeitgeist over the summer.

For many younger South Koreans, President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived declaration of martial law late Tuesday night was their first exposure to a kind of turbulence that older generations remember all too well. Since South Korea was founded in 1948, a number of presidents have declared states of military emergency. The most recent — and the most notorious, perhaps — came after the 1979 assassination of President Park Chung-hee, a former general who had occasionally used martial law himself to crack down on political protests and opposition since seizing power in 1961. Soon after Mr. Park was killed, a general, Chun Doo-hwan, staged his own coup. In May 1980, he declared martial law, banning all political activities, closing schools and arresting dissidents.

In a world where sentiment drives purchasing decisions, these differences in opinion could shape how much people end up spending this holiday season. "It's very hard being a millennial and having to worry about buying a house, affording groceries, rent, all that stuff. Meanwhile, Trump voter Armando Duarte, a 62-year-old retired utility worker from Fort Lee, New Jersey, told CNBC he's feeling a lot better about the holiday shopping season since Trump won. In GOP-won states, shipping volumes increased by 50.4% after the election, while Democrat-won states saw volumes decrease by an average of 11.2%. CNN —Can the green shoots of clean energy break through the “brown blockade”? Those huge current and planned investments in new manufacturing plants may represent the sole opportunity to preserve any elements of Biden’s blueprint for growing the domestic clean energy industry. Republican districts are slated to receive an equally large share of another $435 billion in clean energy projects that have been announced but not yet built, the analysis found. The US reliance on the fossil fuels driving climate change has been declining for years, but only at a modest pace. Yet interrupting that transition by repealing the federal policies benefiting clean energy remains a dangerous gamble.

Environmental groups are gearing up to push back against the incoming Trump administration, which they expect to make sweeping policy changes more quickly than was seen when Donald Trump took office in 2017. The first Trump administration took at least 74 actions seen as weakening environmental policy, according to a tracker from the nonpartisan Brookings Institution. A cadre of environmental groups filed suit, and the monument was fully restored by Biden in 2021.

He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. Millions of Americans risk losing subsidies next year that help them pay for health insurance following President-elect Donald Trump’s election win and Republicans’ victory in the Senate. Even Democratic control of the House likely won’t save the subsidies, he added. As of Thursday afternoon, House Republicans had won 209 seats, just nine short of the majority, according to an NBC News tracker. In 2024, more than 20 million people got health insurance through the ACA, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. “This means fewer people will know their rights under the law and many will not sign up for ACA health care plans.
