The debate is set to take place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Dec. 6, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Those are crucial states in the nominating process, as they are the first four to select their preferred nominee. Traditionally, candidates that fail to make a debate stage lose the attention of the media, voters and donors. The third Republican debate, which has a similarly structured polling threshold of 4%, will take place on Wednesday in Miami.

(AP) — Election officials in Mississippi’s most populous county had to scramble to complete required poll worker training after an early September breach involving county computers. In Hinds County, such training is typically completed by early October before a November general election, according to Election Commissioner Shirley Varnado. Mississippi has a general election Tuesday with key races such as governor and secretary of state — the state’s top election official. In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the county with 73% of the vote, while Republican Donald Trump received 57.5% statewide. Issues with the state’s network were resolved and access to the statewide election management system was restored, according to state election officials.

The Justice Department plans to monitor polls in two dozen states across the country to ensure no one intimidates voters or otherwise meddles with Tuesday's midterm elections. The department's Civil Rights Division selected 64 jurisdictions in 24 states, including Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Nevada, for oversight in both the general election and early voting. The division routinely monitors elections in the field, starting in 1965 when Congress passed the Voting Rights Act. The White House's Office of Management and Budget initially rejected the Election Assistance Commission's request to create the website. EAC officials immediately resubmitted their HelpAmericaVote.gov request. In a separate statement to Insider, the General Services Administration, which had overseen distribution of ".gov" website domains since 1997, confirmed it was no longer involved in approving or denying federal agencies' website requests.
