Walking toward the shrinking remnants of what used to be the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan was like entering hell. I reached the edge of one of the scattered lakes which are all that remain of this once-great body of water. In the nearby town of Muynak, black and white newsreels in the local museum, and pictures in the family photo albums of residents, tell of better times. During the Soviet era, fishing communities like Muynak ringed the sea, thriving off its bounty: sturgeon, flounder, caviar and other staples of Soviet dinner tables. But over the decades, Soviet authorities diverted rivers that flowed into the sea to irrigate cotton and other crops.

A video of a red-coloured lake in Chile has been falsely claimed online to show the River Nile, with some users suggesting it's a sign of “the end times”. “You mean to tell me on November 9, 2023, the Nile river looks like this,” said one person who added a voiceover to the clip and shared it to social media (archived). However, the video shows a lake in Chile that is famed for its red colour, not the River Nile. Reuters found no reports or corroborating visuals of the River Nile, which stretches across northeastern Africa, turning red on Nov. 9. The video show Laguna Roja in Chile, not the River Nile.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

REUTERS/Erica Dischino/ File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 27 (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday voted to advance a marijuana banking bill, raising hopes for the cash-dependent cannabis sector to get access to regular banking services. The Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation Banking Act (SAFER) bill, introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last week, will now move to the Senate floor. Shares of SNDL (SNDL.O), Trulieve Cannabis (TRUL.CD), Cronos Group (CRON.TO), rose between 1% and 3% following the vote. An earlier version of the bill, the SAFE Banking Act, had failed to secure a Senate vote despite the House of Representatives passing it seven times. "Realizing this first vote out of the Senate signals strong bipartisan support from both chambers of Congress," said Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers.

The Energy Department has announced a $325 million investment in new battery types that can help turn solar and wind energy into 24-hour power. Batteries are increasingly being used to store surplus renewable energy so that it can be used later, during times when there is no sunlight or wind. The department says the projects will protect more communities from blackouts and make energy more reliable and affordable. “Long-duration battery storage is like a rainy-day savings account for energy storage,” said Jodie Lutkenhaus, professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University. This one is led by the California Energy Commission in collaboration with Faraday Microgrids.

LONDON, Dec 14 (Reuters) - A 6-year-old boy became the fourth to die after the children fell into an ice-covered lake in central England earlier this week, police said on Wednesday. Britain is in the middle of a cold snap, with heavy snowfall blanketing parts of the country on Sunday night and Monday. "It is with heartfelt sadness that we have to report this afternoon, the six-year-old in hospital has lost his fight for life," West Midlands Police said on Twitter. Police had continued to search the lake after conflicting reports that other children might have fallen in but said on Wednesday those searches had now been completed. [1/5] A person walks through the snow as cold weather continues, in London, Britain, December 12, 2022. Operations in many parts of the city's underground network were either suspended or faced delays, while motorways witnessed gridlocks due to snow. The snow caused issues for commuters and holidaymakers at the start of a fortnight where rail workers and border officials plan industrial action. Southeastern, which operates rail services into London, advised passengers not to travel due to severe disruption caused by snow and ice. Meanwhile, Britain's National Grid (NG.L) on Monday issued a notification to warm two winter contingency coal plants.
A Republican-led county in Arizona that flouted a statutory deadline for election certification ended up certifying its results Thursday shortly after a judge ordered officials there to take action. Officials in Cochise County voted 2-0 to accept the results of the Nov. 8 election, enabling statewide certification to move forward Monday. Ann English, the sole Democrat on the three-member Board of Supervisors, and Vice Chair Peggy Judd, a Republican, voted to approve the election results. Hobbs lauded Pima County Superior Court Judge Casey McGinley's order compelling the county to canvass its results. Voters in Cochise County largely favored Lake, a prominent election denier who has refused to concede.
Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs sued a Republican-controlled county Monday after it refused to certify its election results by the state's statutory deadline. The lawsuit, filed in Arizona Superior Court, aims to compel the Cochise County Board of Supervisors to certify the county's results from the Nov. 8 election. Officials in Cochise, one of 15 counties in the state, voted earlier in the day against certifying its election results. Under state law, Arizona is supposed to certify its results by Dec. 8 — with or without certification from all of the counties. Cochise County is the only county in the state that refused to certify its results.
The Kelliher Fire Department assisted in the rescue on Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota. About 200 people ice fishing in Northern Minnesota were rescued Monday afternoon after a large sheet of ice broke away from shore and drifted into Upper Red Lake, according to the local sheriff. A fisherman called 911 at around 11:30 a.m. Monday saying the anglers were stranded, according to a press statement from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s office. Upper Red Lake is about 300 miles north of the Twin Cities, and 40 miles south of the Canadian border.
Abu Dhabi CNN —As Western states try to wean themselves off their addiction to hydrocarbons, Gulf oil nations have been pushing back hard, warning that a hasty transition away from fossil fuels will be counterproductive. According to the World Bank, Qatar had the highest carbon emissions per capita as of 2019, followed by Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. So, investment in clean energy projects and renewables “makes very good business sense and PR sense for the Gulf,” he said. Gulf petro-states are warning against a quick transition away from hydrocarbons, with the UAE calling for a “mixed energy” approach that minimizes emissions without cutting hydrocarbons. Much of the hydrocarbons exported by Gulf states go to some of the world’s biggest consumers and polluters, including China and India.
