Brashier said some clients had containers that were once destined for the Port of Savannah diverted to the Port of Norfolk in the last hours before the strike began. More than a dozen container vessels are currently waiting in the port anchorage area of Freeport, Everstream Analytics data shows. MSC, the largest containership company in the world, has diverted two vessels, according to Vizion. A container ship departs the Port of Newark for the Atlantic Ocean on September 30, 2024 seen from New York City. Christian Roeloffs, cofounder and CEO of Container xChange, said the timing of this strike is especially challenging for shippers.

CNN —Toy company Mattel has launched the first ever blind Barbie in its latest move to make the iconic doll more inclusive and represent more sections of society. “To be accepted so much that the most popular doll in the world now has a visual impairment and looks like me. I still can’t believe I’m typing this but blind Barbie is here.”Lucy Edwards, a blind broadcaster and disability activist, poses with the first blind Barbie to be released by Mattel. “We recognize that Barbie is much more than just a doll; she represents self-expression and can create a sense of belonging,” said Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls, in a statement. Alongside the first blind Barbie doll, Mattel is also releasing a Black Barbie doll with Down syndrome to further diversify its range, a year after it released its first ever doll with the genetic condition.

Can Big Art Make It in Las Vegas? Urs Fischer Weighs In.

The Swiss artist Urs Fischer suggests beginning our day together with coffee in the Village. No, this is the Las Vegas version, tucked beyond an ocean of slot machines in the far corner of the timeworn, low-lit New York-New York Hotel and Casino on that notorious stretch of real estate called the Strip. “There’s more to see here that’s interesting than some other newer places,” he says, leaning back on a metal bistro chair in front of the faux glassed-in storefront of a stage-set tenement building that showcases a top-hatted mannequin wrapped like a mummy, holding a wicker basket of prosthetic hands and feet. “It’s artificial, but in a good way.”That, of course, is a matter of taste, as is the very notion of Las Vegas itself. That’s where he lives with his two daughters — Charlotte, 15, and Grace, 8 — in a modest-sized but lushly gardened 1920s home near Dodger Stadium.

How to Use Up Those Easter Eggs
  + stars: | 2024-03-31 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I had a lovely run of Brooklyn sandwiches going, before work, school and Easter intervened to send me back to the kitchen. A colossal roast beef, fried eggplant and mozzarella hero from Defonte’s in Red Hook, with hot peppers, gravy and mayonnaise. (A few years ago, I ginned up a recipe for the roast beef hero from Defonte’s.) But today is Easter, and not really a day for sandwiches — unless they’re ham ones on little potato rolls, with strong mustard, to eat in a side yard in the chill while children run around looking for hidden eggs. I want to make deviled eggs (above) to celebrate the holiday puckishly, or maybe a big egg salad to serve in lettuce cups.

Here’s Why a New York City Lobster Roll (With Fries!) Costs $32New York City has not always been a lobster roll town. She and her husband, Ralph, started out by selling whole lobsters out of a building they had bought in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The pandemic upended everything at the Red Hook Lobster Pound. Prices surged across the board, and by mid-2022, Ms. Povich felt she had no choice but to raise the price of her signature item, a lobster roll and fries.

Arts Executive to Lead Pioneer Works

Mara Manus, a former executive director for the New York State Council on the Arts, will become the chief executive officer at Pioneer Works, the nonprofit cultural center in Brooklyn, its board of directors announced on Tuesday. Manus, who will start in October, replaces the executive director Maxine Dalio, who left at the end of last year, and the interim chief Jill Eisenhard. She will work closely with the artist Dustin Yellin, the founder of Pioneer Works; Gabriel Florenz, its founding artistic director; and the astrophysicist Dr. Janna Levin, the chief science officer. The appointment marks a pivotal moment for Pioneer Works, which is housed in a former iron works factory in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Lately its ambition has grown; in a major capital project, it now plans to open a publicly accessible roof deck observatory — a rarity in New York City.

It was a sad day in Brooklyn when Ample Hills Creamery closed its doors. Just before last Christmas, the beloved ice cream parlor in Prospect Heights — and all 12 of its remaining scoop shops across the country — shut down after a decade-long roller-coaster ride of brand-building, bankruptcies and heartbreak. “We made every mistake it is possible to make,” said Brian Smith, who founded Ample Hills with his wife, Jackie Cuscuna, in 2011. To their own great surprise, they will reopen that original store on Wednesday, followed over the summer by three others in New York City. Schmitt put the company in receivership and sold off its assets, including a factory in Red Hook that cost nearly $7 million to build.

Mr. Gutman is an environmental planning consultant and a member of the New York-New Jersey Storm Surge Working Group. In terms of population at risk, New York City is the most vulnerable city in the country, according to Climate Central, a nonprofit research organization. On a barge in Red Hook, Brooklyn, dockworkers chant against their corrupt union boss. “We’re striking this ship!” yells the group’s leader. This is a scene from Brave New World Repertory Theater’s production of “The Hook,” the first American staging of an adapted Arthur Miller screenplay. The show, which opens at the Waterfront Museum on Friday, follows Marty, a longshoreman in 1950 who fights against the union corruption that controlled Red Hook’s waterfront. Now the show returns to the neighborhood in which it is set, staged aboard a docked ship straight from Panto’s time.

Seven years ago, Larry Lubarsky was a 31-year-old high school dropout who had no money saved and was $100,000 in debt. Lubarsky buys products — like electronics, beauty supplies or toys — in bulk and then re-sells them on Amazon for a profit. "I had no idea that selling on Amazon was even a thing," Lubarsky says of his first brush with the business. Starting his own businessThe windfall from his cut of that Amazon business got Lubarsky back on his feet. He rented his own apartment in Brooklyn and in 2014, used his newly acquired expertise to launch his own Amazon business.
