The planet saw its hottest day on record
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Angela Fritz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Sunday was the hottest day in recorded history, according to preliminary data from a climate tracking agency monitoring temperatures since the mid-1900s. It’s the second consecutive year average global temperatures have crashed through shocking climate records and will not be the last, as planet-warming fossil fuel pollution drives temperatures to shocking new highs. July 21 clocked in at 17.09 degrees Celsius, or 62.76 Fahrenheit, and was the hottest day on Earth since at least 1940, according to the preliminary data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Around a hundred cities across the US are experiencing their hottest start to summer on record, and swaths of southern Europe have been grappling with triple-digit temperatures. Global climate records are typically broken by tiny fractions of a degree, as was the case with this one: Sunday’s temperature was just 0.01 degrees Celsius above 2023’s record.

CNN —Russia’s lower house of parliament has proposed punishing Russian soldiers caught using smartphones while fighting in Ukraine, state media TASS reported, amid growing concerns that electronic devices can reveal troops’ location on the battlefield. According to a draft law supported by the State Duma Committee on Defense, carrying internet-connected cell phones whose data can identify Russian troops or the location of forces will be classified as a “gross disciplinary offense” punishable by up to 10 days of arrest. Both Russian and Ukrainian militaries have reportedly used enemy cell phones to identify targets during the war, scraping data from photos and messages to track coordinates and launch attacks. Although the Kremlin has acknowledged the risks posed by soldiers carrying cell phones, Russian military bloggers have criticized the draft law, claiming it shows the Duma’s lack of understanding of the nature of modern warfare. Russian soldiers are already banned from publicly distributing information that could reveal the identity or location of military personnel.

CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Kottakis blamed the crisis on Leros on a failure to maintain the island’s two desalination units, which are both in disrepair. Tourism is “unsustainable and zero-planned,” which is leading to a tremendous rise in water demand, said Mylopoulos, the university professor. Multiple wildfires raged and at least six tourists, including British TV presenter and doctor Michael Moseley and an American tourist, died as high temperatures scorched the Greek islands.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request from a former Colorado county clerk to halt her upcoming trial on charges stemming from her alleged involvement in an apparent security breach at the county’s election offices in 2021. Justice Neil Gorsuch denied the request from Tina Peters, the former clerk of Mesa County, Colorado, and a prominent 2020 election denier, without comment. The order came from Gorsuch because he oversees matters arising from the appeals court that rejected Peters’ efforts to throw out the criminal case. The criminal investigation into the clerk’s office began after Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, accused Peters and her deputies of facilitating the breach. Peters’ trial is set to begin on July 29.

"Historically, whenever the unemployment rate has started to rise, it has never gone down again. The unemployment rate unexpectedly climbed to 4.1% in June , tied for the highest level since October 2021. The strategist added that such conditions typically lead to higher risk premiums and lower asset prices, especially given the current elevated market levels. Just as homeowners insurance protects you financially if your home is physically damaged or destroyed, title insurance protects you if someone makes a claim against your property's title. How title insurance worksHere's what the title search and insurance process looks like from start to finish:The process of obtaining title insuranceWhen you (or your lender) hire a title insurance company, they'll perform a title search on your home. Once the title has been cleared (or cured), the title company will issue a title insurance policy. Unlike many other types of insurance, title insurance isn't an ongoing cost.
