U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles might lose her bronze medal. She had placed fifth before the inquiry, behind both Romanians, but received a tenth back on her final score, boosting her onto the podium. In one, the team asked that the 0.1 point penalty for stepping out of bounds on Maneca-Voinea's final score be returned because it was "given without basis." It also requested that Chiles, Maneca-Voinea and Bărbosu all be placed in third and earn bronze medals. If she had not received the deduction, Maneca-Voinea would have scored higher than Bărbosu and Chiles, even after Chiles' score was increased on appeal.

CNN —The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Saturday that the initial inquiry made by the USA over Jordan Chiles’ score in Monday’s gymnastics floor exercise final was filed after the one-minute deadline. That means that Chiles’ score is being reverted to the original 13.666, which was only good enough for fifth place. It’s unclear as of Saturday what that means for the bronze medal that Chiles was awarded. Immediately after the competition finished on Monday with Chiles’ routine, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu thought she had won the bronze medal after posting a score of 13.700. CNN has reached out to the FIG to ask what their ruling will be on whether Chiles’ medal will be revoked.

Perhaps the most iconic image from these Games occurred after one of the few gymnastics events she didn’t completely dominate, the individual floor competition. In the stands, supporting and helping to coach him, was Renaud Lavillenie, the Frenchman whose world record Duplantis first broke in 2020. Then there was the American sprinter Noah Lyles, who earned the title of world’s fastest man by winning gold in the 100-meter dash. Jordan Chiles and Simone Biles came up with the plan. They had both wanted to be on the top step of the medal stand after the final event of the women’s gymnastics competition, the floor exercise. But Biles, the favorite, had made a few mistakes, and Chiles had made a few more, so they instead became bookends to the true headliner: Rebeca Andrade of Brazil. After Chiles accepted her bronze medal and Biles her silver, Andrade was introduced as the Olympic champion. As she approached the podium — completing the first all-Black podium in Olympic gymnastics history — Biles and Chiles turned to Andrade, dropped to one knee and bowed.

To end the Olympics she once thought would never happen for her, Simone Biles began her floor exercise routine on Monday and did what she was made to do: flip and twist and thrill an arena filled with people there to watch her. Every time Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, landed one of her wildly difficult tumbling passes, the crowd seemed to shout, “Wow!” all at once. And when she was done, standing alone on the floor in her sparkly leotard, the spectators rose to honor her — perhaps as much for her entire career as for a brilliant but flawed floor routine. Biles stepped out of bounds twice during the routine, which was by far the most difficult that any of the finalists attempted. When Chiles’s bronze medal was announced, she cried — and Biles smiled and laughed while hugging her.
