In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

But sometimes, you simply can't give your child exactly what they want in a given moment — and that's a good thing, according to a child psychologist. Parents who say "yes" to their kids too often— whether reflexively or as an attempt to avoid tantrums — actually do their children a disservice in the long run, Kennedy said. By giving in too easily, you can inadvertently damage necessary boundaries that help children learn appropriate, respectful behavior, she added. "In fact, I would argue, it almost becomes dangerous for our kids to conflate being valued with getting what they want." Two Democratic senators are urging the Biden administration to issue a policy directive that could temporarily limit President-elect Donald Trump's ability to deploy U.S. military troops domestically after he takes office. “We write to urge you to issue a policy directive that prohibits the mobilization of active duty military or federalizing National Guard personnel to be deployed against their fellow Americans unless specifically authorized,” they wrote. After he takes office on Jan. 20, Trump could issue his own policy directive that would reverse the directive issued by Biden. Warren and Blumenthal, whose offices said the letter speaks for itself, apparently hope that publicly highlighting the issue might deter Trump. It allows the president to deploy military troops in cases of insurrection, rebellion or extreme civil unrest.

Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 12 for his conviction on federal gun charges. Republicans have for years attacked Hunter Biden over his foreign business dealings and accused him and the president of corruption. Together, the 12 counts Hunter Biden is convicted of or has pleaded guilty to carry a maximum prison sentence of 42 years. “I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter,” Biden said. “The clemency power has few limitations and certainly would extend to a Hunter Biden pardon,” Eggleston said.

WASHINGTON — GOP lawmakers began publicly fuming shortly after President Joe Biden announced that he was pardoning his son Hunter Biden. President-elect Donald Trump's communications director, Steven Cheung, reacted to Biden's announcement without naming the president or his son. "The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system," Cheung said in a statement. "I’m shocked Pres Biden pardoned his son Hunter bc he said many many times he wouldn’t & I believed him Shame on me," said his X post. Biden's plans to pardon his son, which were first reported by NBC News, came after the president said publicly multiple times that he would not pardon Hunter Biden.

CNN —Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, was pushed out as the head of two veterans’ advocacy organizations amid internal allegations of mismanagement and personal misconduct, The New Yorker reported Sunday. It also alleges that he sexually pursued female staffers, and that the organization ignored another staffer’s alleged sexual misconduct. It claims that his management team “sexually pursued” employees and divided the organization’s female staffers into two groups — “party girls” and “not party girls,” The New Yorker reported. The accuser told police that Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone and then sexually assaulted her. Years later, Hegseth paid the accuser in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, his attorney Timothy Parlatore told CNN in a statement last month.

Many Americans already have whiplash after recent swings in mortgage rates: After the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate peaked at nearly 8% last fall, rates fell steadily ahead of the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut in September. That trend has since reversed, and mortgage rates have climbed back up to nearly 7% as investors bet that the Fed will cut rates fewer times than initially expected due to recent strong economic data. This helps enable a reliable flow of money to mortgage lenders, allowing them to offer more affordable rates to would-be homebuyers. During the housing meltdown of 2008, the two companies were brought under government control in an effort to stabilize the housing market. Some analysts advocate for full privatization, meaning the government would not provide assurances to backstop the two mortgage companies.

CNN —President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter deepened an entanglement of politics and the rule of law that has tarnished faith in American justice and is almost certain to worsen in Donald Trump’s second term. And the cases against Hunter Biden lack the constitutional gravity or historic importance of the indictments against Trump and his frequent attacks on the rule of law. Already, Republicans are arguing the Hunter Biden pardon shows that the current president, and not the next one, is most to blame for politicizing the system of justice by meting out favorable treatment to his son. Yet at the same time, Hunter Biden put himself in a position in which he created a political vulnerability and potential conflict of interest for his father. Then, the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia soured many of the 45th president’s supporters on the justice system.

CNN —A highly decorated former Israeli defense minister has caused a firestorm by accusing Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in northern Gaza. The interviewer expressed surprise at Ya’alon’s use of the phrase “ethnic cleansing,” asking, “Is that what you think – that we’re on the way there?”“Why ‘on the way?’” he responded. The Israeli military has for two months been carrying out an intense and deadly operation in northern Gaza, targeting what it says are resurgent Hamas militants. Vanishingly few aid deliveries have been allowed into northern Gaza, according to the World Food Programme. “Under this title, ethnic cleansing is effectively being carried out; I don’t have another word for it.”The interviewer said that such a phrase evoked “dark periods” in history.

In his statement, Mr. Biden said, “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision.”After Mr. Biden announced the pardon, Hunter Biden issued a statement of his own. “I said I’d abide by the jury decision,” Mr. Biden told reporters during the Group of 7 summit in June. Legal analysts had said it was possible that the president’s son could receive a year or less behind bars or even probation. Over the weekend, Mr. Trump said that he would nominate Charles Kushner to be the U.S. ambassador to France. Mr. Biden had been set to remain free on bond until his sentencing hearing, which was scheduled for mid-December.

Will the Markets Check Trump’s Power?
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Jeff Sommer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The president-elect follows the markets closely. Since Election Day, a great deal of financial analysis has been devoted to one central question: How will the new Trump administration affect the markets? But another important question isn’t being asked as frequently: To what extent can the markets serve as a check on the power of the president? Given this vacuum, it’s reasonable to wonder whether the markets will play an outsize role. Yes, in a tenuous and unpredictable way, the markets are likely to influence the next administration’s decision-making and, occasionally, serve as a check on some of Mr. Trump’s most immoderate behavior.
