The slump comes as investors price in higher odds of a Trump win in the upcoming US election. Emerging market stocks are headed for their worst monthly decline since January, with the MSCI Emerging Markets Index falling for a fourth day on Thursday for a 3.1% decline this month. A select few EM stocks have taken the biggest hits, with Samsung, Alibaba, Tencent, and Meituan accounting for more than half of the index's fall. "There has been a significant change in investor sentiment, and investors' risk budgets have likely been changing as a function of that." Investors are also expressing disappointment in China's stimulus measures, which initially fueled a rally in EM stocks last month.

The presidential race remains razor close, with control of the White House at a coin-flip. AdvertisementIn just over two weeks, Election Day 2024 will be here — a final cap to a wild, at times unprecedented presidential fight that, for the moment, remains far too close to call. Noted election forecaster Nate Silver's model now shows Trump with an extremely slight lead in what continues to remain a toss-up race. Harris trolled Trump on Friday for being "exhausted," referencing a string of interviews he has reportedly walked away from. Small stocks historically see big upward moves near presidential elections, Cantor Fitzgerald says. AdvertisementSmall-cap stocks are set for a catch-up amid a confluence of perfectly aligned factors ahead of the presidential election, Cantor Fitzgerald says. Johnston also forecasts increasingly higher odds of a Trump win, which would benefit small stocks even more. Those factors would increase investors' confidence and encourage more rotation into riskier, underperforming small stocks. Multiple Secret Service officials have been put on leave for their actions leading up to and responding to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a source familiar with the decisions told NBC News. Those put on leave include the Secret Service’s special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office, whose office was responsible for coordinating the security plan with local law enforcement leading up to the rally. The source familiar with the decisions did not confirm the exact number of officials on leave and said the number may continue to grow as an internal investigation into the assassination attempt continues. He was already in a difficult spot before his debate with former President Donald Trump. I think Biden has work to do, but I think he can do it," former White House communications director Kate Bedingfield wrote on X in a series of posts. Biden's dismal approval rating of approximately 38% has remains below the roughly 48% threshold incumbents have needed to win reelection. Biden's worst 2020 position was a four point lead over Trump, according to CNN. Their belief is that Trump's campaign will rue its decision to opt against an extensive on-the-ground presence in the key battleground states.

Under the University of Virginia Center for Politics' current projections, there are five true toss-up states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. The reality is that if Biden is stuck playing defense in states Democrats usually win, Trump's return to the White House will be a foregone conclusion. The only question then will be how many Electoral College votes would the former president win. "If Biden's position gets worse, that's when you see maybe a Virginia or New Mexico get in play," Kondik said. If former President Donald Trump wins a second term in the November election, expect him to try to stay in power beyond his allotted four years, says Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. Right now, a second Trump term is a real possibility. AdvertisementInstead, Trump is more likely to declare a state of emergency, Stiglitz said, in an attempt to delay or cancel elections. The executive branch has no power to move the date of elections, according to the National Constitution Center. By underweighting the experience of certain groups — especially lower-income or frontline workers — policymakers could learn the wrong lessons from the post-pandemic economy. The Great DivergenceIf you ask Americans how the economy is doing, the general sentiment can be summed up in one word: bad. Similarly, the Conference Board's consumer confidence data isn't quite at its post-Great Recession lows, but it's far below its 2017-19 average. The ASEC data uses a very large sample to provide the best possible insight into households' economic well-being, with more than 75,000 households participating. Similarly, the focus on the prospect of a recession soared, even outdoing the period in 2020 when the economy was actually in a recession.

FEC, progressives have forecast the ruin of American politics by corporate spending. More than a decade on, elections are competitive and no doom has come to pass, but the same false alarm is now making the rounds on the political right. Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley has introduced legislation to reverse Citizens United as a way to punish corporations whose progressive politics he dislikes. He told RealClearPolitics that his “goal is to get corporate money out of our politics,” and to stop companies from “controlling our elections.”

The margins were between 4 and 10 percentage points, with a survey sampling error of between 4.4 and 4.8 points per state. The only state where voters said they would choose Biden over Trump was Wisconsin, where the president led the Republican front-runner by 2 points, within the margin of error. During the 2020 election, Biden won all six of these battleground states, albeit some by very slim margins. These issues will be top of mind for voters next year; 57% of respondents said economic issues would be the most important factor in their vote. The survey points to troubling signs ahead for the Biden reelection campaign.

Some in the crowd, angry over his refusal to block the certification of the 2020 defeat of the Trump-Pence ticket, chanted, "Hang Mike Pence!" Former Vice President Mike Pence is runnning for president. Pence was loyal to Trump during most of his presidency, but stood up to him on January 6. By entering the race, Pence will officially challenge former President Donald Trump — a man he publicly stood by throughout his presidency, right up until Trump pressured him to subvert Joe Biden's 2020 election win. DeSantis has criticized Trump's response to the pandemic, though Trump handed the reins of the response to Pence during his tenure. Pence was deeply involved in the Trump administration, with his fingerprints especially visible on healthcare policy and on defending religious groups.

The primary is likely a contest between Trump supporters and those who want an alternative. And GOP primary voters know Trump's "brand." The GOP primary base appears to split into two even camps: Trump supporters and those looking for an alternative. Opinion | A Peek Behind the MAGA Curtain

It is President Biden, not Trump, who mishandles classified documents. False narratives are often sustained by a few kernels of truth, and so it is in MAGA America. Moreover, not all of Trump’s opponents possess the cleanest of hands. Given these facts — and Thursday night’s peek at MAGA America — my colleague Frank Bruni’s warning to Democrats yesterday was timely and important: Democrats should not hope to face Trump in 2024. All too many Trump opponents — in both parties — have spent so long building their voluminous cases against him that they’ve forgotten how he looks to the other side.
