To the Editor:Re “Enough,” by Roxane Gay (Opinion, Nov. 17):I empathize with Ms. Gay’s feelings regarding not yielding “even a little” to Trumpism’s “odious politics.” But we also cannot be naïve about what’s necessary to most effectively fight and defeat Trumpism: political power. To win future elections Democrats — increasingly the party of well-educated, well-off citizens who have the privilege of voting based on concerns over the rule of law and cultural issues, not whether they can pay this month’s rent — do not need to cater to all who voted for Donald Trump. They just need to win over a small slice of the electorate that may have voted for previous Democratic candidates but, perhaps holding their noses, didn’t in 2024. They must acknowledge many voters’ fear, anger and insecurity over both major parties failing for decades to adequately address ever-increasing income and wealth inequality — that even when “the economy” improves, too often everyday workers still fall farther and farther behind. And they must relentlessly focus electoral messaging on their plans for how to repair this ever-worsening economic gulf.

Every year thousands of people attempt to hike the entire trail or “thru-hike” it, and about 3 million people visit portions of the trail, according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of leading pro-democracy figures to up to 10 years prison Tuesday in the single largest trial under a national security law that critics say has been used to all but eliminate political dissent in the Chinese territory. Lawyers for the defendants have argued that such action was within the bounds of Hong Kong law. In March, Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature also enacted local national security legislation. Among the 47 are “second-tier pan-democrats” who were previously active members of the Hong Kong legislature, Burns said. Hong Kong officials said last month that there was no time limit for prosecuting the cases, noting that it takes time to gather evidence.

The narrative from Silicon Valley is that the AI train has left the station and any smart investor had better hop on before these products become “superintelligent” and start solving all the world’s problems. Now, some of the leading language models appear to be hitting a wall, according to at least three reports last week.
