Juneteenth, long a regional holiday in the U.S. South, rose in prominence following protests in 2020 over police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and other African Americans. Juneteenth, a combination of the words June and 19th, is also known as Emancipation Day. Tomika Miller, the widow of Rayshard Brooks, and their daughter Dream at his funeral in June 2020. The Atlanta City Council approved a $1 million settlement to the family of Rayshard Brooks , a 27-year-old Black man who was shot and killed by a police officer there in 2020. The settlement, passed in a 15-0 vote Monday, addresses civil claims brought by Mr. Brooks’s family. It comes several months after a special prosecutor declined to pursue criminal charges against the officer who shot him and a second officer at the scene.
Brooks was fatally shot by an officer amid national unrest over police brutality after a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd. Two officers located Brooks and bodycam footage showed they had a calm conversation with him for almost 40 minutes. In the footage, Brooks could be seen holding a stun gun he had grabbed from an officer as he ran away. “While we are disappointed that prosecutors didn’t pursue a criminal case against the officers involved in Mr. Brooks’ death, we continue to hold out hope that the Dept. of Justice will intervene in this matter,” Brooks' family's attorneys said on Monday, according to WXIA.
