An 18-year-old New York state employee was killed while battling a wildfire in Orange County's Sterling Forest Saturday. Dariel Vasquez, an aid working for the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department, was helping mitigate the forest fire when he was killed, New York State Police said in a statement. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of one of our New York State Parks employees while responding to a wildfire in Orange County yesterday," Gov. Wind gusts and humidity are helping to fuel wildfires burning across the Northeast. A whopping 27 million people from New York to Massachusetts are under fire alerts Saturday afternoon. Cities under fire alerts include New York City and Boston, where wind gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity of around 25% to 30% is expected. The active wildfires are increasing concerns around air quality, especially in the New York City area. Sunny and dry conditions are expected in the area Saturday, with wind gusts up to 20 mph.

CNN —Norwegian cyclist André Drege has died aged 25 following a crash at the Tour of Austria, his team Coop-Repsol announced on Saturday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the team posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. CNN —A federal appeals court ruled on Monday that white supremacist and nationalist groups will have to pay a more than $2 million in punitive damages to people who suffered physical or emotional injuries from the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 2021, a jury ruled white nationalist leaders and organizations had to pay more than $26 million in damages to those who suffered injuries from the rally. The “Unite the Right” rally was a two-day event to protest the city’s plan to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Circuit Court of Appeals found a state law which caps the total dollar amount of punitive damages each person can receive to $350,000, court documents show. CNN —The 2024 Tony Awards are underway at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. CNN —Kevin Spacey has said that he was “too handsy” and that he’s been guilty of “pushing the boundaries” in the past, in a lengthy interview released Tuesday. The two-time Oscar winner was responding to claims of inappropriate behavior in an interview that ran for more than 90 minutes. “I’m absolutely 150% prepared to take accountability for those things and mistakes that I made… bad, bad, bad, behavior some times,” he told Piers Morgan Uncensored on YouTube. Last year, Spacey, 64, was found not guilty of seven counts of sexual assault and two counts of other serious sexual offenses following a four-week trial in London. The allegations covered a period between 2004 and 2013, when Spacey served as artistic director at the Old Vic theater in the British capital.

A preliminary 79 tornadoes were reported Friday across six states, most occurring in Nebraska and Iowa, where homes were leveled and buildings collapsed. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Pottawattamie County after video posted on social media showed parts of Minden, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, Nebraska, completely flattened. In nearby Shelby County about 40 homes were damaged, said county emergency coordinator Alex Londo. National Weather Service offices are surveying the damage ahead of more severe weather expected Saturday. More than 30 million people in Oklahoma City; Dallas; Wichita, Kansas; Omaha; Milwaukee; and Madison, Wisconsin, are in the path of severe weather.
