A day after Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she intended to seek the Democratic presidential nomination, more than 40,000 Black men from across the country convened on a virtual fund-raising call to discuss what the moment required of them. For four hours, one Black man after another — prominent politicians, activists, entertainers — laid out the challenges ahead for Ms. Harris, including the racist and sexist attacks they expected from her opponents. But it was not long before the men confronted the elephant in the room. “Sometimes as Black men we get confused as to what strength is, and sometimes we think that standing behind a Black woman as a leader does not display strength as Black men,” said Kwame Raoul, the attorney general of Illinois. “I’m standing behind a Black woman to be president of the United States, and it doesn’t make me any less of a Black man,” he said.

Serge Raoul, an Alsatian-born former filmmaker who with his brother, Guy, a classically trained chef, founded Raoul’s, a clubby French bistro and SoHo canteen in Lower Manhattan that drew generations of artists, rock stars, writers, models, machers and movie people — along with those who yearned to be near them — died on March 8 at his home in Nyack, N.Y. The cause was a glioblastoma, said his son, Karim Raoul. Serge was on hiatus from making documentaries and Guy had been working as a chef uptown when Serge set out to find him a restaurant. A friend thought Luizzi’s, a cozy and well-worn spaghetti and meatballs joint on Prince Street between Sullivan and Thompson, might be for sale. As it turned out, the owners, Ida and Tom Luizzi, were happy to make a deal if it included the provisions that Mr. Luizzi could drop in every day and that Inky the cat could stay.

U.K. inflation surprised with a dip to 6.7% in August, below expectations and sparking increased bets on a pause in interest rate hikes from the Bank of England on Thursday. The goods rate rose slightly from 6.1% to 6.3% but was more than offset by the services rate slowing significantly from 7.4% to 6.8%. Caroline Simmons, U.K. chief investment officer at UBS, told CNBC that the central bank will still most likely hike on Thursday. "We do believe that's going to be their last hike, however, because we do have these downward forces on inflation," she added.

LONDON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - More than 60% of British businesses are optimistic about the country's economic growth in the medium term and their own revenues in the next few years, a survey showed on Monday, challenging some of the gloomy forecasts for the UK economy. About 61% of over 1,500 business leaders expect economic growth to be "somewhat or significantly better" in 2025, according to the Boston Consulting Group Centre for Growth's inaugural business survey. Some 63% also think their revenues will grow over the next three years. "UK businesses are undoubtedly feeling squeezed, but they're still standing." Data for the survey was collected between Jan. 11 and Feb. 2, when the BoE announced its latest interest rate hike and economic forecasts.
