US President Joe Biden gestures after speaking about student loan debt relief at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, April 8, 2024. A federal judge will let expire a temporary restraining order against the Biden administration's sweeping new student loan forgiveness plan, which could deliver relief to tens of millions of Americans. U.S. District Judge Randal Hall, appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, delivered the win for the Biden administration late on Wednesday. This is breaking news. The Biden administration's sweeping student loan forgiveness plan was temporarily blocked again Thursday by a Missouri judge, just one day after a federal judge in Georgia said he would let a restraining order against the relief expire. St-Louis-based U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, issued the latest preliminary injunction against Biden's relief plan. The latest order capped 24 hours during which federal student loan holders were subjected to judicial whiplash, as a lawsuit challenging Biden's aid package, brought by seven GOP-led states, bounced from Georgia to Missouri courts. The states bringing the suit — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Dakota and Ohio — allege that the U.S. Department of Education's new debt cancellation effort is illegal. Hall directed the case to be transferred to Missouri, because the states claim that Biden's plan would most harm student loan servicer Mohela, or the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority.

President Joe Biden's student debt forgiveness plan faces another setback as a federal judge extended the temporary restraining order against it on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Randal Hall, who was appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, said that Biden's plan would remain blocked for an additional 14 days. The ruling came as the Biden administration was expected to publish its final rule on a revised student loan forgiveness plan in October. The judge first issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 5 shortly after the lawsuit was filed. Those enrolled in the plan, around 8 million people, do not have to make payments at this time.

A federal judge has extended a temporary restraining order against the Biden administration's latest student loan forgiveness plan, threatening the White House hope to provide financial relief to tens of millions of Americans ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential elections. In the meantime, Hall said he would review the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction against the Biden's relief plan, and the Biden administration's request to dismiss the case. The continuation of the restraining order is the latest setback for the Biden administration's efforts to cancel people's federal student loans. President Joe Biden began promising to alleviate people's education debts during his 2020 campaign bid, but Republican legal challenges have consistently stymied his attempts. The development stems from a lawsuit against the president's aid package brought by seven GOP-led states earlier this month.

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks as he announces a new plan for federal student loan relief during a visit to Madison Area Technical College Truax Campus, in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S, April 8, 2024. But the Biden administration official told CNBC that the Department of Education had only instructed loan servicers to get ready for the debt cancellation. The program is the third Biden administration effort to forgive student debt to end up blocked by Republican-led legal challenges. In June 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the administration's first attempt to cancel up to $400 billion in student debt without prior authorization from Congress was unconstitutional. Two months ago, a federal appeals court temporarily halted Biden's new affordable repayment plan for student loan borrowers, known as SAVE.

Nike's "performance" segment, meanwhile, includes many of its core sports products, such as basketball shoes. AdvertisementWhile revenue from performance products grew in Q4, declines in its lifestyle business overshadowed them, contributing to the worse-than-expected results. In its last fiscal year, lifestyle products have grown to about 60% of Nike's business, UBS analyst Jay Sole estimates. "One of our big takeaways from Nike's 4Q report is its lifestyle business needs a major reset," Sole said. That could help drive performance sales — especially those through Nike's digital business, a major pain point at the moment for the company.

A top executive at Tyson Foods who is a fourth-generation member of the Tyson family business was suspended on Thursday after he was charged with driving while intoxicated, the company said in a statement. John Randal Tyson, 34, the company’s chief financial officer and a great-grandson of Tyson’s founder, was arrested in Fayetteville, Ark., by the University of Arkansas Police Department and booked at the Washington County jail at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, jail records show. It was the second time in less than two years that Mr. Tyson had been charged with an alcohol-related offense. Mr. Tyson, whose father is Tyson’s chairman, was named the company’s chief financial officer in September 2022. He had been in his position just over a month when he was arrested in November 2022, after a woman called the police to report that she had returned to her home in Fayetteville to find him asleep in her bed, The Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.
