CNN —California is stripping the word “squaw” – a derogatory term for Indigenous women – from dozens of place names across 15 counties, state agencies recently announced. The updated place names are expected to go in effect by January 1, 2025. The upcoming changes are part of nationwide efforts to examine and replace derogatory terms on geographic features. The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names approved renaming more than 30 locations, marking “a significant milestone for Native American women,” the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) said in a news release Friday. A Spanish research vessel that investigates marine ecosystems has been abruptly diverted from its usual task to take on a new job: Helping in the increasingly desperate search for the missing from Spain’s floods. Carrera, 60, is head of the fleet of the research vessels run by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, a government-funded science center under the umbrella of the Spanish National Research Council. The boat also helped research the impact from the lava flow that reached the sea from the 2021 La Palma volcano eruption in Spain’s Canary Islands. Finding a body at sea, Carrera said, is highly unlikely. Those findings will contribute to initiatives by other Spanish research centers to study Spain’s deadliest floods of the century.

Demonstrators hold a banner reading 'Mazon Resignation' during a march on November 9 to protest against authorities' response to deadly flooding in Valencia, Spain. The regional president, who according to some Spanish media reports was at a restaurant hours into the floods, has denied missing any calls prior to the floods turning catastrophic. CNN —Five people were killed when a small plane crashed through a fence and hit a car while aborting takeoff at an Arizona airport Tuesday afternoon, officials said. “Preliminary information indicates that the plane impacted the airport perimeter fence and a passenger vehicle during an aborted takeoff,” the NTSB said in an emailed statement to CNN Wednesday morning. Five people were killed in the crash, according to Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos, a spokesperson for the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, who declined to comment further on the deaths. “Five people were on board the plane,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to CNN. Over the past seven decades, Puerto Rico has been governed by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, currently in office held by Gov. This year, however, the candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a minority party that advocates for the island’s independence from the U.S., has had a breakthrough. Independence Party candidate Juan Dalmau has gained enough momentum to have a fighting chance at defeating Jenniffer Gonzalez, the candidate from the incumbent pro-statehood party, and relegating the candidate from the Popular Democratic Party, Jesús Manuel Ortiz, to third place. As a result, Congress passed the PROMESA law in 2016 to create a federally appointed fiscal oversight board to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt. In addition to this, Puerto Rico was hit by devastating natural disasters that include 2017’s Hurricane María and a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the pandemic.

CNN —The deadly flooding that rocked Spain this week following intense, historic rainfall is so expansive and severe the area looked like an inland sea from space. Parts of the area now look like an extension of the Balearic Sea after unprecedented rainfall turned what should be dry ground into a vast expanse of water, satellite imagery captured on October 30 shows. Satellite imagery taken on October 8 and October 30 show the before and after of this week's flooding in east-central coastal Spain. Cars are piled in the street with other debris on October 30, 2024, after flash flooding rocked the Sedaví area of Valencia, Spain. Rapid analysis is done in the immediate aftermath of extreme weather events by analyzing data and climate models to establish what role climate change played.
