Read previewFrom Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, billionaires are the power players of philanthropy. It's not possible to generalize, but billionaires' philanthropic contributions likely do not outweigh the negative aspects of wealth inequality. For every Chuck Feeney or 'good' billionaire, there is an Elon Musk or Bill Gates, both with questionable practices. Bill Gates is an example. How does MacKenzie Scott's philanthropy differ from how other billionaires typically approach giving, and what lessons can they learn from her?

Hugo Swart, formerly Qualcomm's head of XR, joined Google's AR group in April to lead ecosystem strategy and partner relationships. Related storiesMark Lucovsky, a senior director on Google's AR software, left last July, citing "changes in AR leadership and Google's unstable commitment and vision" to the product. "Doing anything first-party is a challenge relationship-wise," said a former Google AR team member. There is internal speculation that Samsung will be the first to also build glasses with Google's AR software, according to two employees familiar with the matter. Without a device of its own and with its AR software still in development, Google now finds itself on the back foot.

Read previewI worked as a Starbucks barista for nearly a year, and I became extremely familiar with just how expensive the popular coffee chain is. As a stingy spender, I made several mental notes on ways customers would unnecessarily waste their money during my shifts. If I find irresistible merchandise, I'll take advantage of the Starbucks rewards program. If you're looking for a caffeine fix, stop wasting your money on hot venti lattesGrande and venti lattes have the same amount of espresso. Stop paying for bottled waterI've always been baffled by people who insist on buying bottled water from Starbucks.

As someone who worked as a Starbucks barista for over a year, here are some of the biggest red flags to look out for. It's not always wise to mobile-order a drink with cold foam or shaken espressoCold foam won't last that long on top of a drink. Mary Meisenzahl/InsiderCold-foam cold brews have boomed in popularity over the past few years — pumpkin cold foam, Irish-cream cold foam, almond milk-honey cold foam, the list goes on. A little mixing can taste nice, but you lose the texture of the cold foam, which is a delight in itself. The same principle applies to any shaken espresso drink.

As improbable as his achievements are, Schwarzenegger believes his life and outlook can be a model for others. Then I realized that that’s funny. If they want to be stuck in the ideological corner, then I say, I think I’m freer if I’m not, and I can work with more people. Google's AR glasses were beset by a messy strategy, company insiders say. Google's AR fumbles have proven frustrating for employees in the face of mounting competition from Apple and Meta. "They're dabbling," one insider said of Google's AR efforts. Ramin Talaie/Getty ImagesNorth leaders were told they would lead a new project under Google's hardware boss, Rick Osterloh, and Google's AR and VR leader, Clay Bavor. Analysts at a major Wall Street research firm see multi-year growth and share gains ahead for off-price retailers. Under this scenario, lower-income consumers will choose to spend their money at off-price retailers. The analysts like Ross Stores (ROST) best, and called Burlington Stores (BURL) high-risk, high-reward, with a multi-year turnaround story. Bank of America, in a note this week, emphasized that the off-price retailers, including TJX, will be eager to take over the additional closed Bed Bath & Beyond locations. Bottom line We're encouraged to hear from Bernstein that lower-income consumers might be ready to spend more at off-price retailers, leading the analysts to say they would view "Q1 off-price weakness as an entry point" into the stocks.
TabRamin Talaie/Getty ImagesTab became one of the first diet sodas to hit the market in 1963. That gave it a niche audience that few other soft drinks could match until Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi came along in the early 1980s, Fast Company reported in 2020. Finally, in 2020, Coke said it would discontinue the soda at the end of that year as part of a broader culling of underperforming brands. But even until its demise, Tab had its fans. One woman Insider interviewed in 2020 even ran a website to help Tab drinkers find the soda for sale as its distribution dwindled.

Google's moonshot factory is coming down to Earth

The project, known internally by its codename, "Valkyrie," was the typical science-fiction-sounding idea that Google's self-described "moonshot factory" was designed to dream up. But amid a lack of successful launches and a tech industry facing economic headwinds, insiders say the lab is now hitting the hard-reset button and rethinking its purpose within Alphabet, Google's parent company. X swapped standard corporate titles like "Communications Lead" and "Manager" for grander and more-nebulous names like "Factory Whisperer" and "Firestarter." Its internet-balloon unit, Google Loon, meant to bring people in rural areas online, was shuttered in January 2021. "I think the infusion of VC people is a good thing," one former senior X employee said.
The painful adjustments will ripple across the industry in 2023.Insider's Big Tech reporters share what to watch this coming year. At $44 billion, the debt-fueled deal was completed quickly at valuations from the frothy tech bull market of 2021. Jonathan Raa/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesThe slow breakdown of Twitter under Musk appears to be upon us. Mastodon has experienced a major influx of users, hitting more than 5 million accounts after Musk took over Twitter. With intense tech antitrust scrutiny, these new services are unlikely to be gobbled up by Big Tech.
