Here's a look at some of the key counties to watch across the seven presidential battleground states, ordered by the state's final poll closing time (in Eastern Standard Time). Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.

On the last day of a brutal, wild and tightly contested campaign, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris blitzed voters Monday with their final pleas for turnout. Harris and Trump both put their emphasis Monday on Pennsylvania, suggesting they still believe "Keystone State" is more than just a nickname. Its 19 electoral votes went for Trump in 2016 and Biden, who abandoned his re-election bid this summer, in 2020. Harris in particular focused on Pennsylvania, barnstorming the state with all four of her final-day rallies. Most of the rest of the country is considered safe turf for either Harris or Trump.

Trump referenced that rally during his speech in Raleigh on Monday, estimating the crowd inside to be 28,000. The crowd for Trump's speech was estimated to be around 53,000, according to the House committee investigating the riot. Harris's campaign said that around 75,000 people attended her speech last week at the same site as Trump's Jan. 6 speech. When she was interrupted by pro-Trump protesters at a rally in Wisconsin last month, she told them they should "go to the smaller rally down the street." The smaller crowd sizes with less enthusiastic participants so close to Election Day have surprised some Republicans, but it's unclear what the cause — and the significance — is, and if it's evidence of less momentum for his campaign.

Former President Donald Trump's universal tariff proposals could cause prices to skyrocket on clothing, toys, furniture, household appliances, footwear and travel goods, according to a new report from the National Retail Federation. Trump has said he would impose a 10% or 20% tariff on all imports across the board. In both cases, the NRF found that the impact of Trump's tariffs would be "dramatic" double-digit percentage price spikes in nearly all six retail categories that the trade group examined. The report found that the greatest price spikes could occur for toys: between 36.3% and 55.8%. The report found that the more expensive retail goods would lead to a $46 billion decrease in purchasing power, if Trump imposes both universal tariffs and especially high China rates.

When asked why, a Trump campaign official put it bluntly. “If there’s one state that could bite you in the a--, it’s North Carolina,” the official said. Yet he’s made a plan of returning to North Carolina each day until the election. While Harris campaign aides on social media chided Trump for holding a defensive posture in a state that hasn’t gone blue since 2008, the Trump campaign cast the repeated visits to North Carolina as an aggressive, cover-all-the-bases strategy. “North Carolina, I’m here to ask for your vote.

But that hasn’t stopped abortion rights supporters from pushing for votes up and down the ballot. Across the South, supporters of abortion rights are using the issue to motivate voters. Although Texas does not have a statewide referendum on abortion, Rep. Colin Allred's Senate campaign has galvanized abortion rights supporters. It’s easier for Democrats to campaign on the issue, she said, because their party is more united in favor of abortion rights than Republicans are in opposition. That switch proved pivotal in passing the state’s abortion ban.

Unlike younger generations, who until recently may have taken federal abortion protections for granted, older women recall the era of illegal backroom abortions that preceded Roe. A fight for the senior voteNot all older women are motivated by abortion. But in a race that is expected to be decided on the margins, boosting support among women and older voters could make a difference. There are some signs in early voting data that women seniors are highly motivated to vote, said Tom Bonier, a Democratic strategist and CEO of the data firm TargetSmart. Abortion bans in many states, including North Carolina, make exceptions for ectopic pregnancies, but patients have reported delays in care.

Census data released on October 17 indicates that New York recorded the highest rate of people moving out of all 50 states. Business Insider calculated each state's net moving rate by comparing the number of people who moved into and out of each state per 1,000 people. The states people move out of the mostOf all 50 states, New York ranks last with a net moving rate of -9.23. But because of its larger population and the greater number of movers into the Golden State, California's net migration rate lands right after Louisiana's. Harris plays cleanup on Biden 'garbage' comment

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden's controversial comment that appeared to label supporters of former President Donald Trump as "garbage." Harris also said that Biden had "clarified" the comment he made Tuesday. "Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of garbage,'" Biden said on the call. In this version, it seemed that Biden was saying the "garbage" was Hinchcliffe's demonization of Latinos, not Trump supporters. In 2020, Biden beat Trump in the state by fewer than 81,000 votes, a margin of less than 1.2%.

A secretive Democratic super PAC has been quietly running a massive Spanish-language ad campaign in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, pumping tens of millions of dollars into trying to reach persuadable Latino voters. That’s an unusually large investment in Spanish-language media. By contrast, for instance, Republicans have touted $1 million and $5 million Spanish-language ad campaigns this election. “Losing the workers would devastate our companies, our industry and our economy.”‘The math is just not there’There is evidence that foreign-born construction workers help keep the housing market in check. “Immigrant construction workers in Sun Belt metros like Raleigh, Nashville, Houston, and San Antonio have helped these cities sustain their housing cost advantage over coastal cities despite rapid growth in housing demand,” the authors wrote. Undocumented workers would likely flee ahead of any national deportation effort, Hetrick said, even though many have been in the U.S. for well over a decade.
