Drake alleged in a court filing Monday that Universal Music Group and Spotify conspired to “artificially inflate” Lamar’s summer hit “Not Like Us” by using bots, payola, and other tactics. (UMG, a Dutch American-owned company, has no relation to NBC Universal, the parent company of NBC News.) Both Drake and Lamar are signed to UMG, under different different divisions — Drake under Republic Records and Lamar under Interscope. The filing alleged that UMG violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, and engaged in deceptive business practices ad false advertising. “I speak for EVERYONE when i say we stand with UMG Drake acting like a spoilt brat who lost,” one X user said.

CNN —Musician Drake alleges that Universal Music Group “conspired” to artificially boost Kendrick Lamar’s searing diss track “Not Like Us” on Spotify, according to a pre-action petition submitted to a New York court on Monday. It has also amassed almost 900 million streams on Spotify to date, according to the petition. Drake is currently represented by Republic Records, a division of UMG and Lamar is currently represented by Interscope records, also a division of UMG. Drake’s petition accuses UMG of paying an independent radio promoter acting as an intermediary, who then paid other radio stations to boost airplay of Lamar’s track. “Not Like Us” became the most successful song spawned by the feud and earned five Grammy nominations earlier this month.

Philadelphia CNN —President Joe Biden plans to launch a nationwide effort to mobilize Black voters during a campaign rally in Philadelphia on Wednesday, aiming to win back support from a slice of the electorate that polls show wavering in support. Biden’s aides say they aren’t taking Black voters for granted as surveys suggest an erosion of support, particularly among Black men. Many polls have found Black voters more disconnected from the Democratic Party than they have been in decades. He’s also dialed into Black radio programs and touted issues like infrastructure investments and canceling student debt when promoting his record to Black voters. CNN —Independent presidential candidate Cornel West will announce his vice presidential running mate on Tavis Smiley’s radio program Wednesday, according to his campaign. On the show, slated to air at noon ET, West will discuss why his West Coast-based vice presidential pick – who, like him, has never held elected office – best aligns with his values, according to a campaign official. They will also appear jointly at a rally in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens in New York later this month. Like fellow independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., West needs to announce a running mate so that he can compete to get on ballots across the country in earnest. “I think it’s highly likely that we’ll come out on the ballot in New York,” a spokesperson for West said.

The Supreme Court ruled today that states do not have the power to disqualify a presidential candidate from running for office under the 14th Amendment, an authority Colorado, Illinois and Maine had tried to use to bar Donald Trump from their ballots. The court had been widely expected to reject the challenges to Trump’s ballot eligibility. Though the justices provided different reasons, none took a position on whether Trump had engaged in an insurrection — which the states said made him ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. All nine said that states could not bar candidates from federal office, while five went further, arguing that Congress must act to give Section 3 force. In an interview on a conservative radio program, Trump said he was pleased by the outcome.

Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Ameen Sayani, a pioneering radio presenter who drew generations of listeners in India with his melodic voice on a radio show that became a national phenomenon, died on Tuesday. Born in 1932, Ameen Sayani was introduced to radio by his elder brother who was an English-language presenter. In 1952, Ameen became one of the first voices to be heard on the airwaves in Asia by starting the radio program for which he became the most famous, “Binaca Geetmala,” showcasing Bollywood music. He hosted the program on Radio Ceylon, one of the oldest radio stations in the world, based in what is now Sri Lanka. The show was later moved to All India Radio, the state-owned public broadcaster.
