PHILADELPHIA — Vice President Kamala Harris will take questions from three members of the National Association of Black Journalists on Tuesday, six weeks after former President Donald Trump questioned her ethnicity and clashed with a journalist at the organization’s national convention in Chicago. But it is not an official campaign event, and it is open only to select NABJ members and 100 students from historically Black colleges and universities. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said, drawing gasps. “NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization,” NABJ President Ken Lemon said in a statement last week. The interview with Vice President Harris is designed to inform the public and give our members access to help inform their reporting.

New York CNN —As Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump take the stage Tuesday night in Philadelphia in their first face-to-face meeting, the spotlight will also shine on the host of the debate: ABC News. And Trump’s campaign had already accepted the debate rules as sent out by ABC News’ general counsel. But ABC executives remained confident both candidates would show up, and ultimately, the Harris campaign relented. In the days ahead of the debate, Trump has attacked the network, questioning its impartiality. Both Muir and Davis are experienced primary debate moderators, but neither has moderated a presidential debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates.

We’ve never in my lifetime changed candidates this late in the game,” West said, pausing as she left a Harris campaign office to pick up a new packet of door-knocking materials. “There is a lot of excitement around Vice President Harris, actually. However, despite the preparations, Trump’s campaign has yet to find its footing on a consistent message about the vice president. Outside the campaign, Trump’s allies worry there is no strategy for what is now a competitive race. New York CNN —Donald Trump on Wednesday took the stage before a divided National Association of Black Journalists conference. Trump unleashed a barrage of vicious attacks on Kamala Harris, absurdly questioning her Black identity (she is indeed Black). And his hostility toward Black journalists asking tough questions is also nothing new. That was not the case on Wednesday at the NABJ conference. Wednesday’s interview-turned-confrontation with reporters at a convention of Black journalists in Chicago made perfectly clear that nothing has changed. Trump’s remarks, he told donors in Maine Wednesday, put on display “a worse version of an already horrible person.”But he also cautioned against focusing too narrowly on the former president’s words. His reaction – his attack on Harris – was largely unprompted and strayed from the reporters’ line of questioning. North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer took a different tack, dismissing Trump’s remarks as “satire,” but also suggesting it was “not wise” politically to raise the issue. U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on Day 4 of the Republican National Convention (RNC), at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., July 18, 2024. Donald Trump is set to field reporters' questions at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, as he re-tools his presidential campaign to combat his likely rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. The Republican nominee's Q&A before a live convention audience is expected to focus on the biggest issues facing the Black community, NABJ said. The event gives Trump, who won just 12% of Black voters in his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden, an opportunity to directly appeal to voters of color. The decision by NABJ, the nation's largest association of journalists of color, to host Trump quickly spurred a backlash both inside and outside the group.

Most people expected fireworks when it was announced that former President Donald Trump would appear at this year's National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. And the conversation has heightened pressure on the NABJ from its members over the Trump visit. NABJ President Ken Lemon in a statement Tuesday said that the organization had been in talks with Harris' team for an in-person panel before she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. But April Ryan, the White House correspondent for The Grio, reported that NABJ leadership informed Harris' team that it was preferable that she be in-person for her appearance. NABJ member Kathia Woods took to X to express her opposition to the organization's decision to invite Trump to speak in Chicago.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed Wednesday that his 2024 Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, “happened to turn Black” a few years ago, saying that “all of a sudden, she made a turn” in her identity. A scheduled appearance by former President Donald J. Trump at a conference for Black journalists in Chicago has generated fierce debate. The National Association of Black Journalists, which is hosting the conference, announced on Monday that Mr. Trump would take part in a question-and-answer session with political reporters on Wednesday. The conference’s description says the session will “concentrate on the most pressing issues facing the Black community.” Harris Faulkner, a Fox News anchor; Kadia Goba, a politics reporter at Semafor; and Rachel Scott, an ABC News correspondent, will moderate the session. The event is expected to be live-streamed on the organization’s YouTube and Facebook pages. After the announcement of the event with Mr. Trump, a number of well-known Black journalists harshly criticized the group for arranging it, arguing that the organization was giving a platform to someone who had openly denigrated a number of reporters.

The co-chair of the annual National Association of Black Journalists convention stepped down Tuesday in apparent reaction to that group's decision to have former President Donald Trump speak at its convention and career fair in Chicago on Wednesday, among other factors. "To the journalists interviewing Trump, I wish them the best of luck," NABJ24 convention co-chair Karen Attiah wrote in a social media post announcing her decision to resign her position. CNBC has requested comment from Attiah and from NABJ, as well as from a spokesman for Trump's presidential campaign about Attiah's announcement. NABJ on Monday announced that the Republican nominee Trump would "participate in a conversation with journalists" at the convention before attendees.

There are two moments from Mike Johnson’s early days as speaker of the House that almost perfectly encapsulate the broken way that so many Republican evangelicals approach politics. But before she could finish, Johnson’s Republican colleagues started to shout her down. An ABC News reporter tried to ask GOP Rep. Mike Johnson about his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. In the end, 125 House Republicans, including then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, signed on to the Supreme Court brief. While House Republicans failed to overturn the results, 139 lawmakers voted to uphold challenges to at least one state. While a majority of House Republicans voted to object to both states, there were some notable exceptions. Emmer, who was then the leader of House Republicans campaign arm, was briefly the GOP's nominee to become speaker of the House on Tuesday.

DiotimaThe designer Rachel Scott’s focus on tailoring and craft — in particular, crochet made in her native Jamaica — has been clear since she launched her brand, Diotima, in 2021. But it wasn’t until she held her first presentation, at a gallery in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood earlier this month, that fashion week attendees were able to observe the line’s detailing up close: Models traversed the room in intricate bead vests and floor-length gowns made from delicate, netlike cotton fabrics. Scott, 39, formerly a vice president of design at Rachel Comey, also collaborated with the Jamaican visual artist Laura Facey this season, drawing inspiration from the work in Facey’s 2022 solo exhibition at the Kingston arts venue Ormsby Hall. “It had a haunting energy,” Scott said in a statement, “one that prompted me to reflect, once again, upon the history and legacy of slavery in the Caribbean.” Facey’s chalk drawing “Seed” (2022) appeared as a textile print, and the artist made small versions of her heart-shaped wooden sculptures, which Scott hung like talismans from long cord necklaces and silver hoop earrings.

Nikita Mazepin, 24, is trying to overturn the British sanctions so he can negotiate with Formula One teams to return to the sport in 2024. Mazepin is also challenging EU and Canadian sanctions as part of his attempt to return to Formula One. Scott said in court filings that Europe's second-highest court temporarily lifted some EU sanctions in March, allowing him to attend a specialist training facility in Italy. However, lawyers representing Britain's Foreign Office argued that Mazepin could still negotiate with Formula One teams with the sanctions in place. Another hearing is expected to take place in June to decide whether sanctions can be temporarily lifted pending Mazepin's full challenge, which will be heard in July.
