Fourteen Democratic senators will introduce an amendment Monday evening to remove language from Congress’ massive defense spending bill that seeks to ban coverage of gender-affirming care for transgender children of servicemembers, the office of Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., told NBC News. I trust our servicemembers and their doctors to make the best healthcare decisions for their kids, not politicians,” Baldwin said in a statement. In a statement following the House vote last week, Johnson said the legislation prioritizes “military lethality, not radical woke ideology. A draft of a media release shared with NBC News — and scheduled to be made public Monday evening — from Baldwin’s office said that if the transgender health care provision survives, it could affect 6,000 to 7,000 children of U.S. servicemembers. The amendment to remove the trans health provision from the defense bill will be co-sponsored by Democratic Sens.

World’s biggest iceberg, A23a, is on the move again

CNN —The world’s largest iceberg is on the move again, drifting through the Southern Ocean after months stuck spinning on the same spot, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have said. Spanning an area of 3,672 square kilometers (1,418-square-miles) when measured in August – slightly bigger than Rhode Island – the A23a iceberg has been carefully tracked by scientists ever since it calved from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in 1986. A satellite image of the A23a iceberg seen in Antarctica in November 2023. European Union/Copernicus Sentinel-3/ReutersThen, the iceberg was carried away by ocean currents before it became stuck again in a Taylor column – the name given to a spinning vortex of water caused by ocean currents hitting an underwater mountain. A23a has held the “largest current iceberg” title several times since the 1980s, occasionally being surpassed by larger but shorter-lived icebergs, including A68 in 2017 and A76 in 2021.

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLANDAn impressive start for a young advocateFor a time, the man born Nicholas Alahverdian went by Nicholas Rossi, after his adoptive stepfather. When Antypas told him he was fired, she said, social media posts appeared claiming her vegan cheese was fake, as did a “fraud alert” website that had her passport photo framed as a mug shot. It wasn’t until two years later, when Alahverdian was arrested on the rape charges from Utah, that Antypas learned his real identity. Alahverdian — who completed one extension course at Harvard — disputed Antypas’ account in an interview with “Dateline.” Antypas paid him for “work that was performed,” he said. So if you have $10,000 in gains and $12,000 in losses, you won’t owe any capital gains tax on the $10,000, and you will be able to deduct $2,000 from your regular income. A traditional IRA can be funded with before-tax dollars (thereby reducing the money you have to pay income tax on for 2024). If you give them to a grandchild, their capital gains basis is the value of the shares the day they receive them. Whereas if you first sold the shares directly you’d owe capital gains tax on the $8,000 gain, leaving you with anywhere from 15% to 37% less in cash to give them, depending on whether the gain was short- or long-term and depending on your tax bracket. It is money that is exempt from income tax, as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes.

But as the country contends with a housing crisis, the fastest growing use of these spaces is apartment complexes, real estate developers said. At least a dozen more apartment projects are underway at malls across the country, including in California, Florida, Arizona and Texas. The case could have wide-reaching implications for transgender youth living in states that have passed similar laws. After the first gender-affirming care ban for minors became law in 2021, a flurry of states passed similar measures. While 19 states passed laws banning gender-affirming care for minors last year, 11 states and the District of Columbia passed “shield” laws protecting access to care. So far this year, Ohio, Wyoming, South Carolina and New Hampshire joined the list of states banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth. A user showed pictures on a Facebook from a Stop & Shop in Pittsfield, Massachusetts with rows of empty shelves and wrote “Avoid Stop and Shop… their shelves are empty.” A user on TikTok posted a video with over 40 thousand views of the empty shelves in a Stop & Shop in South Boston. Many in the comments of both posts said they had been confronted with similar scenes at other Stop & Shop locations. “Stop & Shop is well stocked with turkeys and hams for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, along with staples like potatoes, gravy, and stuffing,” she said.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. That is just one reason why policy experts see a retirement savings crisis on tap for so many Americans over the next several decades. This results in an increase in retirement income of $150 per month,” Gusto’s researchers wrote. Initial data also suggests that the introduction of auto IRAs might correlate with more employers offering their own plans. It’s not entirely clear why, since smaller businesses often cite cost and administrative burden as reasons why they don’t sponsor a retirement plan. And employer plans offer workers tax breaks and direct matching contributions, which can help them grow their nest eggs faster than they otherwise might.

The U.S. is one of few developed nations without federal laws that provide workers paid time off, and just over a dozen states have their own laws to offer paid sick leave. But last week, Americans in more states – Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska – voted to pass new ballot measures that will bring paid sick leave requirements to their workplaces in 2025. Prior to the November election, 15 states and Washington, D.C., had their own paid sick leave laws, as do a number of cities and localities across the country. The effect of pay transparency laws on states
  + stars: | 2024-11-13 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The net effect for employers and employeesWhile only a minority of states require employers to provide pay transparency, their laws are having a domino effect on employers across the United States. “The majority of top-performing organizations (57%) embrace pay transparency and share pay ranges even when not required by law,” Payscale’s report noted. How pay transparency is helping individualsWhile there are federal laws prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender and other protected classifications, most states also have their own pay equity laws on the books. Wieselthier considers pay transparency laws a subset of pay equity because they provide a tool people can use to ensure they’re being paid fairly. “The whole purpose of pay transparency laws is to empower the candidates to negotiate,” Seikaly said.

Trump has been declared the winner in ten states, including Florida, while Harris has won seven. AdvertisementPolls have now closed in the key swing states of Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Each state gets a set number of votes that correlates with its population — if a state has two US senators and three House members, it has five electoral votes. The winner must get at least 270 electoral votes — a majority of the 538 total.
